APH - It's Revolution Time

I drew this as a present for someone, who requested something with Hungary and Russia interacting in some way. I wanted it to be historical, and after doing some research decided that I was going to do something on the Hungarian Revolution. It turned into this monster. After the first few panels, I just kind of stopped caring so much about the lineart and just wanted to get this over with, so the art is rather sloppy and character designs and sizes wildly fluctuate. I was also new to using my tablet at the time, so the lines are somewhat choppy. Still, I’m actually pretty pleased with this, as it’s the first real comic I’ve ever done. I think my favorite panels are numbers 3 and 8 (mostly for the little cameo shot of Poland). I apologize in advance for any historical inaccuracies you may find.

Transcript for those who need help reading my horrible handwriting:

1945: The Red Army occupies Hungary at the end of World War II. Bad times ahead for the Hungarians, I’m afraid.
Person Off-screen: So, Hungary, seeing as how you sided with the Axis during the war, and the Soviets are already occupying your country, Russia here is gonna help you manage your affairs ‘til you get back on your feet, ‘kay? ^^

1949: Using methods like intimidation, torture, and imprisonment to suppress opposition, the Communist Party merged with the Social Democratic Party and stood unopposed at the ‘49 elections.
Russia: Well, seeing as there are no objections, Hungary is now a communist state! Break out the vodka, everyone!

1950: Russification policies force Hungarian schools to teach Communist political propaganda, and everyone to speak Russian.
Russia: You don’t mind me editing these textbooks to be more like mine, da? BTW, here’s your complementary Victory Banner. Welcome to the club, comrade.

1950 – 1950: The Security Police forcibly relocates thousands of people to confiscate their property for communist party members.
Russia: Bye, Hungary! Thanks for the new house!
… Harsh, dude. Harsh.

1952: Obliged to pay war reparations approximating about $300 million and prevented from trading with the West or receiving Marshal Plan aid, Hungary suffered chronic food shortages resulting in vast rationing of bread, sugar, flour, and meat.

March 5, 1953: Joseph Stalin, dictator of the Soviet Union, dies of a cerebral hemorrhage. Good riddance.

June 1956: A violent uprising by Polish workers is forcefully put down by the Soviets, with scores of protesters killed or wounded.
Hungary (thinking): Poland…
Russia: BRB, G2G smack some sense into Poland. <3
Poland: We’re ttly sick and tired of your crap, dude! We quit!

October 1956: Caving to popular demand, the Soviet government grants Poland their reformist demands for trade and military freedoms. Hungary is duly impressed and encouraged by this.
Newspaper: Breaking News! Poland wins concessions! “Totally worth it!”

23 October 1956: The entire Hungarian population revolts en masse.
Hungary: Listen up, bub! I’m officially not putting up with your crap one second longer! I’m taking my country back, and there’s nothing you can do to stop me!

4 November 1956: Soviet forces roll into Budapest and put a brutal stop to the revolution, indiscriminately slaughtering soldiers and civilians alike. The last pocket of resistance surrendered on November 10th of the same year.
Russia: Oh, really?

1989: Hungary holds free elections for the first time in over 40 years, and declares itself a free democratic republic. See ya, Russia!
Hungary: Yes, really. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

Russia: *sob* Why does everyone hate me?! *hic* *sob*

Whew! Done finally! If you stuck with me this long, frankly, I’m surprised. I do hope you learned something though. I certainly did, while I was doing my research. Hungarians are awesomely badass. That is all I have to say. So are the Poles, for that matter.

ahhhh thank you so much for doing this!!! This is a big part of my family's history, so I'm glad someone cares ;w; I think you're teaching many people about something important in world history. so thanks. <3
In short, My grandfather grew up in a little town in Hungary near the border of Austria during most of this. His father was cheif of police in that town, but he was fired because he refused to agree with the communists. let's just say he was one of the lucky ones considering all of my grandfather's stories.

I'm sorry i don't need to bore you with my family history, you are obviously know what happened to most hungarians! hahaha XD

Great job. just... awesome. ;)

I enjoyed this very much! This is one of those periods in American history classes that never gets covered.

Can you clarify for me how Hungary went from being completely routed in their revolution in 1956 to becoming democratic and electing officials in 1989?

Thank you! I'm glad you liked it. ^-^ Yeah, I learned quite a bit myself while doing research for this.

Uhm... I guess the passage of time just took its course. I just chose not to cover the intervening years between the revolution and the free elections because the person I drew this for specifically asked for Hungary and Russia interacting, so I chose the parts of history that they did and looked the most interesting. But if you want to read more, here's the Wikipedia page for the Hungarian Revolution. [link] :)
