Airacobra USA 71st Tactical Recon Squadron by WS-Clave Airacobra USA 71st Tactical Recon Squadron by WS-Clave
The Bell P-39 Airacobra was introduced in 1941, and was an unusual fighter aircraft in that it was designed around the 37mm T9 cannon.

The engine was behind the pilot and fed with air via a scoop intake above.  The performance was severely lacking at high altitude, but the P-39 was highly agile and acquitted itself well in the Pacific and Soviet Union.

The P-39 was armed with 1 x 37mm cannon or 20mm cannon firing through the prop, and a variety of machine guns depending on the version.

This example is a P-39Q of the 71st Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron 1944.

Great work as always. I'm thinking you need to challenge yourself and draw, say, a Catalina or a B-17 that will have complex gun blister shadows. You're making these fighters look way too easy.

I think the 2nd thing I did was a Lancaster with Tallboy bomb - It never met my standards back then, but I might take another crack at a bomber of some kind. My only gripe is the detail thing - they are going to have to be pretty large pics to be able to see anything... :|

Yeah, I heard that spins were nearly un-recoverable, and bailing out was almost suicidal because of the horizontal stab.

Also, with the engine behind the pilot, emergency landings must have been even more dangerous than with other fighters.
