Airacobra GB 601 Squadron 1 by WS-Clave Airacobra GB 601 Squadron 1 by WS-Clave
The Bell P-39 Airacobra was introduced in 1941, and was an unusual fighter aircraft in that it was designed around the 37mm T9 cannon.

The engine was behind the pilot and fed with air via a scoop intake above.  The performance was severely lacking at high altitude, but the P-39 was highly agile and acquitted itself well in the Pacific and Soviet Union.

The P-39 was armed with 1 x 37mm cannon or 20mm cannon firing through the prop, and a variety of machine guns depending on the version.

This example is a P-400 of 601 Squadron RAF 1943.

Wasn't the '400 a modified, larger and more powerful version of the '39?

As far as I can tell it was pretty similar to a 39D... There were a few different engines over the years, but I don't think any of them were 'special' certainly nothing as good as a Merlin anyway..

Yes, a Merlin truly would've made it a fine plane, wouldn't it?

By the way I confused the P-400 with the P-63. According to Wikipedia, the US Army designated the P-39 "P-400" because it was said to reach 400 mph. Strange explanation if you ask me, but I don't know how a plane designation designer's mind operates anyway :D

Ah, the power of advertising - once they removed the supercharger, things were not quite so rosy...
