While the snow storm raged outside, Emma sat on the sofa, her feet up on a footstool being warmed by the fire, with a book resting on her big round belly. Finally, for a moment, Emma was feeling relaxed.
After becoming pregnant again life was getting a little stressful. UNIT still wanted to experiment on her uterus to see how she can have alien babies, Karu was starting school and running around like a mad woman and Soulless numbers were rising, meaning Garex left her more and more often. To help relax her, Garex decided to take Emma on a vacation. They left Karu with her Aunt Rose and Uncle John, Garex cancelled all his meetings and they set off in the car. In his many years of being on earth, Garex had many homes. One home he had was a cottage in the country side, hours way from everyone. Garex had already filled the house with food and luggage so all Emma had to do was relax.
Garex entered the room with a water bottle and a tea. Emma smiled as she took the tea and Garex pushed the water bottle behind her back, sitting with her.
“Better?” asked Garex.
“Better,” said Emma. “Little one is being very fussy today. But its just nice to be somewhere quiet. With you.”
Garex smiled and wrapped his arms around her, stroking her huge belly. The baby kicked and he smiled.
“Have you thought if a name yet?” asked Garex.
“Not yet,” said Emma. “Maybe after a relative? If it’s a boy we could call him Tyrex. You know, after your son.”
“That’s very sweet Emma. But no, they deserve their own name.”
“Well, we have two weeks to think about it.”
Garex kissed her head and they settled back. There they fell asleep to the rushing of the wind and the crackling of the fire. How long had it been since they had a moment like this?
A few hours later Emma woke up. Her belly was hurting, really bad. Oh no. No, no, not now.
“Garex, Garex wake up!” said Emma, shaking him.
“Hm?” asked Garex. “Em? What is it?”
“My belly hurts.”
“Huh? What? But its not for another two weeks. Are you okay?”
“Yeah, I’m fine. Can you call Pyrex though?”
Garex took out his mobile. But he had no signal. Then he checked Emma’s phone. It had no signal either. Trying to hide his growing panic he reassured Emma before getting up to the land line. It was dead. Okay, that was fine, they could just drive home. Garex looked outside. It had snowed a lot since then, so much sure that the road and everything around them was buried in more then a few inches of ice.
“Ah.” said Garex.
“Ah?” asked Emma. “What do you mean ‘Ah’?”
“Darling, sweetheart, love of my life,” said Garex. “Don’t panic but…we’re snowed in.”
Emma sighed and threw her head back.
“So much for a relaxing vacation.” said Emma.
Emma curled up on the bed, holding her belly tightly and trembling in pain. Mean while Garex rushed in with some towels and a bowl of warm water. He placed both on the nightstand and took hold of Emma’s hands.
“Breathe, honey, breathe,” said Garex. “You’re doing so well.”
“I don’t remember it hurting this much last time,” said Emma with gritted teeth. “What if somethings wrong?”
“Whatever happens, Emma, I’m here. I’m with. I won’t let anything bad happen to you or our baby.”
“Garex- AHHHHH! OH GOD! IT’S COMING! HELP ME!”
“Okay, okay, sit up.”
Emma sat up, gasping for breath and Garex put his arm around her. Emma slowed her breathing and pushed for ten seconds. At least that’s what she remembered doing last time. Though now they were alone without help. She was frightened, not for herself, but for their baby. What would tell Karu if something happened? No, no, she wasn’t alone. Garex was with her. He was always with her. Emma pushed again and this carried on for a few hours.
By dawn, Emma was exhausted, laying limp in Garex’s arms. He wiped her forehead and stroked her hair.
“You’re doing great, sweetie,” said Garex. “Just a few more pushes. Just a little bit more and we’ll have our baby.”
“…Matthew…” said Emma between pants.
“Matthew…he was my dad…I want our baby…to be named Matthew…”
“Matthew is perfect, sweetheart. Come on, you just have to push a little more.”
“I know, I know, I’m sorry. If I could do this for you, I would. But I can’t so you have to.”
Emma panted and screamed as she pushed as hard as she could and she didn’t stop. Not until the baby was pushed out and into her hands. The child screamed as she pulled the tiny thing onto her chest. It was a tiny little boy, with thick dark brown hair, with little hands and feet. He was so beautiful. Emma cried and she held her son.
“Hello there, Matthew, hello my little angel…” said Emma. “Look at you. You’re so, so perfect.”
Emma looked up at Garex whose face was already soaked in green tears. He quickly wiped them away though and grabbed a towel, wrapping it around the baby and using scissors to cut the cord. Once the baby was taken care of and Emma was safe, that’s when Garex broke down. He sobbed and held Emma and held their baby.
“My son…” said Garex. “My baby boy.”
Garex looked up and kissed Emma deeply.
“He’s beautiful, Emma, you did so well,” said Garex. “Hello Matthew. My little boy. Welcome to earth.”
They were still snowed in by the next morning. Fortunately, though they did manage to get some single and could call their friends for help. Now they had a small army of their friends and family on the way with snow plows. In the mean time Garex was packing up all their stuff before checking in on Emma.
Emma was cradling Matthew, wrapped in a thick blanket and wearing one of Emma’s t-shirts tied up to fit him. Garex walked over and sat next to Emma, hands on her shoulders and smiling at their baby.
“How’s our son?” asked Garex
“Sleepy little thing,” said Emma. “I don’t blame him, the poor little guy. It was a surprise for both of us, wasn’t it, Mattie?”
“I called your aunt by the way. Karu is really excited to have a little brother.”
“I can’t wait to see her. I just want all of us to be together.”
“We’ll be home soon, my love.”
Garex kissed her head.
“I love you.” said Garex.
