Brain-ghouls

I know this place. This place where we fold inward upon ourselves thinking, like a child thinks; holding a postcard over its eyes, that it is invisible. Folding inward to believe we are less massy and the weight of the ephemeral whatever is collapsed into us with a resounding "Mine!" You know it doesn't work that way, Rusty. You spread it out, everyone smoothing it thin, thin, unti becomes a parachute. Low-speed, high-drag is the way to go. I can't pretend to impersonate the ghouls in your skull, but, they call out over this space and resemble the voices of ghouls l've had to slay and re-slay so many times, I'd think whatever gods give life would tire of making them and move along to the next abomination. Rest, friend. Sleep easy. Morning is coming.

It isn’t as though I expected to be loved. I would have liked it. No, I didn’t expect that they would love me. I was quite strange, and it was difficult to find a space for my self in their space. I laid under the bunk bed and listened to music with my ear against the speaker of a small radio. I read books in the hall closet with a flashlight, and when I was very small, I hid in the cabinet under the bar with the bread and cereal boxes. I played music too long and too loud and too much. During this time, I grew taller until I couldn’t fit in the closet, or the cabinet or under the bed. Girls tried to catch me. I didn’t know, don’t know, why they wanted me to walk next to them or hold their hands. No one else even liked me. One moment, one second, one hour, one day
One heart, one kiss, one touch, one word to say
This Valentine's Day

yet, this love of ours falls at the speed of cherry blossoms
this finite affinity of our hearts to display
candy-coated expressions filled with saccharine obsessions
concealed within the brevity and guise of selfishness and heartfelt lies

One lie, one tease, one look, one sexual kink to please
One laugh, one cry, one teardrop rolling down from the eye
