SS2 Reviews:

"A Contest of Suffering” by DrZime at fav.me/dcddwk4 7,067 words
Emily returns with another installment of her Crumbling Galaxy series. Using the theme "Dearly Departed", she further explores the issue of missing children in her series.  Like many of her other entries, she delights us with curious and unique species of aliens, their quirks, cultures, and odd affects compared and contrasted to the ones we're used to or maybe assume would be universal in a universal reality.  The moral to this story runs pretty deep and comes across clear as crystal.  Emily is able to deliver such solid story, following a thorough arc from start to finish and it's so well rounded throughout.  The best part is how each installment can be read with or without the others, so feel free to jump into this one, there's no heavy lift here to read the prequels before beginning this chapter. That being said, I can't help but wonder if Georgia is Jarrett's daughter!

Andrew delivers an incredible modern world fable of vampires, vampire hunters, river gods, priests and police!  I thoroughly enjoyed every character that was introduced, they felt real and well developed without having to give each of them lengthy exposition.  I feel like there is much more to see and read in this version of reality.  The story was very solid, the objective clear and even though it didn't have a cut and dry victory per se it does reveal a lot about the individuals on the journey.  I think the irony of Sarah's outlook on vampire arrogance is reflected back to her in Sipiwi's words toward the end.  For a brief moment, I thought Sarah was being too much of a try-hard, but it wasn't so much a writing flaw as it was a character flaw (which all well rounded characters should have).  The ending did feel slightly abrupt and deflated, but I guess that just leaves room for more in the future. Check it out, I believe this story is worth diving into.

"The Shadow Over My Soul” by ratscout at fav.me/dcdbbx4 5,666 words
Natasha opens on an unsettling scene that piques a lot of questionss.  Who is Dagonet and why is he happy to be chained up? What *is* Sarah, with her glass skin, and why is she promising to replace Dagonet with artificial pieces one by one? How is he so happy about this? And then there's the mysterious voice in his head.  She did a great job creating this unsettling moment.  The rest of the story that transpires is created beautifully! This brainchild deserves to be appreciated. While there are a few tense slips in the beginning between first and third person, they hold nothing over the head of this legend. The quote at the end leaves readers with that delicate but powerful meaningfulness that really strikes a multilayered understanding of the stories evolution. It might not be evident at first, but it definitely has the power to get under your skin and take hold of you.

A great look at the power of imagination, this story also tackles topics of rape and sexual brutality, which may not be for everyone.  The language seemed a little unnatural in some of the dialogue but since English isn't everyones first language, and I can barely speak intermediate Spanish, Im in no position to critique.  There are some good and some rotten people in this story - which I think mirrors reality fairly well.  The villains motive could be anyone's guess; Hatred, resentment, who knows but whatever the case, it can't be justified or excused. While we don't necessarily get a happy ending, we can see the potential for one down the line.  Such a hard thing to write about and I want to commend the author for doing it anyway.  The ultimate take-away perhaps; be willing to seek and accept help.

Such a wide range of stories, and each with its own fascinating arc.  I'm really proud of our writers and the way they create.  Story telling is such a critical part of our existence and exercising that ability is truly magical. Deciding the winners was extra difficult due to the lack of technical hits this time around. These stories were some of the most polished and proofed stories I think we've had in this competition.  Thank you for entering and I hope to see you all again in future quarters! Without further adieu, Here are our winners:

Important Information about the timeline
I know most if not all of our contestants are always anxious to hear the results, so I felt a little breakdown of how the timing is planned was in order:
-Each contest last 3 months total, making it possible to have 4 quarters per year.
-The writing and entry portion of the contest last the first 2 months for contestants to get their entries finished
-The judging portion of the contest last 1 month, allowing the judge(s) time to read all the entries and make a fair decision for the winners (but Im a procrastinator and read them at the end, so if you need an extension, just ask!)
-Prizes other than DA Points are awarded between the day the winners are announced and the end of the following quarter *DA Points are awarded immediately

ALL aspects of the breakdown per quarter provide excess time for irl issues that can and do come up. (Not just for the contestants, but for the host as well)

HAVE FUN AND GOOD LUCK!!!
