Battle of Grandson by wraithdt Battle of Grandson by wraithdt
I love me some Swiss pikemen:)

I did this piece last year for the Medieval Warfare Magazine issue focusing on the Burgundian Wars where Charles the Bold made the mistake of picking a fight with the Swiss and got his ass kicked. Clearly he didn't get the memo from the Germans and the Austrians who learnt never to mess with the Swiss less they finds themselves on the receiving end of a bristling array of sharp pointy things.

Swiss pike tactics inspired birth of the German Landsknecht and Spanish Tercios and would see dominance until the advancement of modern field artillery.

For those interested you can check out the magazine here. Its a very interesting magazine if you're in to medieval history. >> www.karwansaraypublishers.com/…

Seems to me as if they brought back a bit of the old Greek Hoplite style of fighting during this period.

I get MW, like you said great magazine. The Burgundian wars issue was great, didn't know you did the artwork. Very well done, concentrating on accuracy in uniforms and equipment while still showing the grand scope of the battle in the background.

From what I read Charles doesn't sound like bad Commander, he seemed to do everything right, but he sure was a shit out luck one.

I'm sure he was otherwise otherwise historians wouldn't be talking about him. The Swiss just gave him a lot of grief.

From historical sources i did read was stated that Charles the Bold was found dead after the battle, naked and with deep slashing wounds caused by Halberds.

It wasent in this battle as this one was near Neuchatel and the one where he died was near Nancy latter the same year, but the halberds was possibly a swiss one as the troupes he fsaced were half swiss at this time too.

I am swiss and at school we learned the following phrase to memorise the three battles who was been fought: At Murten he losts his guts, in Grandson his goods, and in Nancy his blood.

Beautiful colours! It really captures the moment. I especially like the cavalry in their shining armor, raising their arms, fearless against their enemy even though they'll most likely fall off their horses after getting stabbed by a spear or get pulled off by the hook of a halberd. Thank you for sharing! :D
