European roller from Zoo Prague!

I had a nice moment with them last time. I really dreamed about shooting this amazing bird in the walk-through aviary with mixed bird species in Zoo Prague. But as the habitat is really natural and full of trees and bushes, you hardly get to see them. And taking photos? Just a tiny chance. And if you finally take a photo, they are TOO far from you OR they have unnatural background behind them. One day I was hopelessly waiting for any chance to shoot them. One of few good spots, where you could get nice green background, was a stone lying in the grass. But both rollers kept flying around and they really did not like my presence in the exhibit. They were nervous and obviously annoyed.
So finally I gave up.
I knelt down to take some photo of other bird species on the stone.
But then a miracle happened.
A roller sat directly on the stone, looking at me!
I was shocked, but started shooting like crazy!
The roller gave me several seconds and few poses.
Then it shrieked very loudly and flew away. It was totally like "Ok, you have your photos already, so now get the fuck away!"
So I said "thank you" and got the fuck away :giggle:

In Spain, these are called "carraca", which also is some kind of accident ship and a... ratchet. You can figure out why this bird has such name. ;)
Carracas are so beautiful and colorful, and this shot makes a great proof of that.

I dont think I have ever seen a bird like that before! It is absolutely adorable! I am glad you had such a powerful experience with that bird. (Sometimes if I am taking a picture (Sorry dont post those on here) I would start getting shakey really bad if something was happening that I had to get a shot on. The fact you kept your cool and got such a still clean shot, is absolutely amazing. Keep up your awesome work.

(*Also, I was listening to ambient soft music when I saw this, and my mouth dropped. Truly this is a stunning piece.)

try to google other roller species - those birds are FABULOUS!!!!

Haha, believe me, I shake a LOT - but when you snap 2-3 000 photos during a SINGLE zoo visit, you usually get something sharp! :D

Those are really colorful! I love how florecent some of these birds become. We have this odd bird called the great tailed grackle that we have down here, and its a bird that is SUPER shiny and florecent, but its more purple. I personally like the brighter blues.

I have never been in a zoo before, so yeah. Anyway, super lucky and nice shot. I especially love how you get the focus forward.

As flashy as they are (especially the males since females were the "camo"), you'd think birbs would like having their pictures taken. Wink/Razz

Wow! Magnificent picture! The detail is fantastic.

I think he decided to pose when he saw you were going to take a picture of some other bird. A little bit of feathered jealousy.
