Group Info

Our group is dedicated to in-depth world building and storytelling. Currently the group is by-invitation only, as a certain level of apparent thought, complexity, and devotion to worldbuilding is expected of members. Unlike other world-building
We are scientists and artists, weapons experts and history buffs, linguists and cartographers. And most importantly, all of us are connoisseurs of good storytelling and great characters.

Discussion of thorny issues in worldbuilding will be encouraged through forum posts. Not sure if your homeworld could actually have three different suns? We will strive to find a scientifically valid scenario wherein your world could exist, and baring that, will try to find work arounds or suggest minor changes that would bring it into the realm of possibility.

Right now, each person brings different levels and areas of expertise. All input is appreciated and valuable so long as it is honestly given and intended to be constructive.

(For those using their own IRC client, join ##World-Moot on irc.freenode.net)

[Additional group links coming soon, please stand by]
Hello world builders!

To try and spark some group participation, I wanted to ask our current members (yes, you!) for some input on possible future group activities.
In future, we would like to organize group events, like art exchanges, contests, group collaborations, and other community centered events, and want your input.
If you've got any ideas for such events, or have something particular in mind that you would like to be a part of, don't hesitate to comment and let us know!

We would also like to remind everyone that our group IRC text chat channel is up and running, and can be joined from the link on our homepage. Stop on by sometime and say hello!

Alright, the IRC channel is up and running.
It's at ##World-Moot on irc.freenode.net
You can use this HTML to add an image link for the Freenode web client directly to a custom box, just remove the two spaces between the brackets:
<  a href="webchat.freenode.net/?channels…"  >
<  img src="www.pnlug.it/wp-content/upload…" alt="Freenode IRC Channel" style="border:0"  >
<  /a  >

So, any idea how to get a forum going? We have been offered a chatroom via Doug7070 and Droakir has made the excellent suggestion that we could set up a mumble or vent to talk through.
In the mean time, though, it'd be good to have a forum where people can just start outlining their story issues, asking those random questions, etc.

Also, what is the best way to go about letting each of us introduce our worlds to one another?

For now, just comment here and we'll get it all figured out!

Regarding the best way to introduce our worlds: I, personally, have been working
on setting up a wikia page for The Calypsis Project. It will contain information on
factions, ships, species, characters and the worlds they inhabit, along with a slew
of other stuff. Of course, it's still very rough and very empty at the moment, as I
haven't had the time to add much. But that's my the next writing project on my
list once I've finished the second book in the series!

From what I gather, it seems you and Doug have enough information to fill a couple
of wikia pages dedicated to your head worlds, so that's always an idea if you're up
for it!

I've had the thought before that I should try to make a wiki for my world. It'd be a big project, but if I could just do it piece by piece, maybe a bit after every writing session (even thinking about all the topics I'd cover is daunting,) it'd be doable. For me, I have the rewrite of my first book about 60% done, and then some days I have to go write some scene that's in the future, or off to the side, or in the past. And of course there's the art, my job, and a class, so parsing things out into little bits is the best way to get anything done, what with all the interruptions. ^^

How exactly are you going about putting yours together? Is there a program or something?

Mm yes, you're a busy person! Lots of things to do. It definitely takes
a while to get everything all set up, but it's something you can put
together a bit at a time. Mine's been up for months now and I haven't
done much with it.

I pretty much just writing the information in my character files in Word
and then copy>paste it over to the wiki editor (which is fairly simple.
The editor can be a little finicky at times, but once you get the hang of it,
it's not so bad. I just referenced other wiki pages to figure out how to
put things together).

As far as forums go, I'm not too knowledgeable about setting such things up, however as I said, I can easily create an IRC chat channel for the group.

I was planning on registering "##World-Moot" on the Freenode network (irc.freenode.net), unless anyone had a better channel name or network to use in mind.

When it comes to Mumble and/or Vent, I am fairly sure that we would need to get a dedicated host for a server on such a service, so that would require some looking into as far as where we could get hosting from.

My S.O has a five-man vent server we can use for free. If we want more through that service, we will have to pay more. It seems like it'd be good to have Scotty set that up for us for now, and we can discuss making the vent larger in the future.

Go ahead and set up that channel, and I'll update the group info page to provide instructions.

The Vent server sounds good, at least to give us an idea of how well it will work out and what we might want as far as getting our own hosting.
