Description

The XM80 is a conservative and cost effective replacement to the M60A3.

The tracks and turret were changed as little as possible, while the portions in between were changed and resized. Intel and captured records make it unclear if brand new castings were required to cast this enlarged hull, or if some method of welding or other is used. Versions have been found with the front chassis utilizing "Stillbrew" or "Burlington" armor. Protection is estimated to be the same for the turret. Protection for the front chassis is estimated to be 400 mm RHA equivalent against KEP threats and 600 mm against HEAT warheads.

Every model seen so far as a series of modular side skirts installed via welding. Current combat reports indicate that these are constructed from "Stillbrew" or "Burlington" as well. Protection on the sides is poor against KEP threats, having inconsistent protection against auto-cannons and failing against a PT-76's D-56T gun. Side protection, however, is a reasonable 600 mm against HEAT warheads.

The weapon appears to be similar to the XM-1s 105 mm gun, with the addition of a 30mm autocannon. It's ability to calculate long distance shots, moving targets, and battlefield conditions; appears to match that of the XM-1. This is not completely certain, as the M60A3 had impressive calculation capabilities for it's time, along with a laser-rangefinder AND a thermal imager.

The resistance of the engine to fires indicates a diesel engine, as does it's middling cruising speed.

The source and inspiration for this tank upgrade is mostly this. You can very clearly see where parts were traced.
