Latest News from the High-Seas :3

Arrr me hearties,

So previously I wrote "Coward of a Man" and a few people actually responded and sent in their chibis. To honour them I will display the two that have been sent in here:

:thumb334006442: - by :iconplease-not-last:

Chibi Chenbeard by Diluculi - by :icondiluculi:

Captain Chibi Chenbeard by Leelu - by :iconleelu:

Chibi Chenbeard by Zephyras-Lied - by :iconzephyras-lied:

Thank ye fer sendin' in yer chibis me friends!

Now if there are those of you who'd like t' get more attention for yer artworks th' RIGHT way, then yer also welcome t' send in yer chibis :3. Just show Chenbeard doin' somethin', fightin' somethin' or being in a particular setting :3 If it's good, I'll use it as a poem cover ^^ The more humourous, fantastic or inspirin' th' better :3

Now then, most of ye all have probably also read the poem "Dishonoured", dealin' with poets who use the works of others without properly crediting them. Now, I've tried t' ignore it for awhile (thinkin' it be a minor problem) but now it's gettin' t'  be as bad as a pandemic. Hence, I hope t' call upon those who want t' be the 'Heroes' of the Literature community, t' try and pitch in and help.

Now, whenever an art piece uses a cover (and I will demonstrate using the chibis when I have time t' lead by example as I always do), ye have t' check if the artist has given credit. If they write somethin' like:

"Got this off google", "Image: [link]", "Cover by [Person]"

Then, I'm sorry, but this is NOT appropriate credit. Th' specific format tha' needs to be used is as follows:

The cover art is not mine, done by [artist], original work is here: [link], I was given permission to use it

The key parts o' those 4 items have been bolded. Essentially the artist needs permission from the original artist, they need t' credit the artist themselves AND link t' the piece used (so that the original artist can also enjoy more views and faves) and finally they need to acknowledge tha' they didn't create this.

Any lit. that uses a cover without obeying these four factors...is disreputable. Yes, it might be a one-off incident or a mistake, but normally these people deliberately do it fer fame and attention. Specifically they enjoy three things:

Fame, Attention, Glory

Now then, if ye discover stuff like this happenin'. The steps t' take are as follows:
1. Alert the original artist about their work being used.
2. Talk t' the the using artist about the proper way of crediting.
3. If they reply politely, ensure that they take the right action.
4. If they reply rudely, report the piece without hesitation.

Some give excuses and say 'Don't post your work on DA if you don't want it to be used.' or 'It's flattery to have your works used.'

BOLLOCKS! That's the same as sayin' 'It be an honour t' be mugged since ye look rich and wealthy'. Remember, even if an image is found on google, the website has to be credited. Plagiarism is not allowed and we are taught this in school. Why should dishonourable art theft be allowed just because its 'flattering'.

If a poet/author believes in their own work, they won't use a cover image they haven't created or that hasn't SPECIFICALLY been designed for them. Yes, you'll get a lot of faves and views that ye don't deserve, but most are clicking for the image and few will read your work.

So t' the community that I love, I hope that those of ye who want t' be heroes will step up and assist the community in becoming a place of honour. Let authors not be know for theivery, but instead for the weight o' their words.

  • Listening to: Some rather angry soundin' raps
  • Reading: The vast resevoir of literature on DA
  • Watching: Every wave on the sea fer a hint o' treasure
  • Playing: Grand Fantasia...always wanted t' be a Necromancer
  • Eating: Cup Ramen - Even Pirates love Ramen
  • Drinking: Grape juice, I don't drink lad...

What if you get the images from somewhere like morguefile? Do you still have to ask permission to use it?

No, because the website says it is free to use. However you must say WHERE you got the stock image from. A good way to reference is demonstrated by artist :iconfeardomized:. This piece can show you how to reference stock images:

:thumb333420259:

In the author's comment section you'll noticed he has given credit to the stock image and to the deviant who posted the stock image.

Generally, as far as I know with stock, they are all free to use. However some images are not stock and yet they are used. If the image is not being clearly listed as 'stock' chances are it belongs to someone and you should try and find the person it belongs to. If you can't find the person and ask permission, the minimum is that you MUST say:

1. I don't own the image
2. I got the image from [place], and the link to where I got it from is [link]

Note: For the link the standard is that you must link to the website, not the fullsize image from google search as that can be counted as 'disguising' the source.

I remember I wrote a fanfic about a picture once, well two of the chapters were about pictures actually. I remembered to credit the person and even linked the people to my story. I think if someone's art has inspired you the least you can do is tell them as well because in the end they're just as much artist as you are and that would probably make their day. Can you truly call yourself an artist if you don't treat other artist with the respect you cry for?

Personally, I prefer NOT using a cover image, because I want my writings to stand out for the words I have written in them. So I can, as a writer and a pirate, say "Aye aye Captain! Keelhaul the blaggarts and lock 'em in the brig!"

"Do what you want cause a pirate is free...
You are a Pirate!"

But in all seriousness, i hate liars and theives, and plagiarism is the exact same thing.

About the plagiarism thing...some also claim that their "Poses" have been used, which is sort of ideotic since some of these poses have been used since 600 BC, and the greeks don't complain "Oh they stole the idea of our ancestors."
Ofcourse I am not an advocat of arttheft, but before we go into discussions we should be aware, that it is also possible that two people have the same idea at the same time.

I live by the saying "give credit where credit is due" especially when crediting others in works.
