One of the largest, most peaceful non-alpha species out there, the Fathomfin is an impressive sight to behold no matter what it's doing. This massive Blue Whale-esque dragon feeds on just about anything that will fit into its mouth, with a preference for large schools of plankton and small fish, marine mammals, and large fish- the more/the larger the animal the better. This massive dragon, unlike some of its cousins, is migratory, spending part of its year around the arctic ice sheets, and part of it in the distant tropics, which are even less familiar to the viking world. Its been observed that the Fathomfin spends its time in the arctic feeding on the rich summer bounty to be found there, and it's thought that the tropics are used for breeding, as no Fathomfin tiny teeth smaller than an average viking longship have been observed around the barbaric archipelago or in the arctic. The Fathomfin as such is inferred to have high stamina, presumably being capable of swimming for weeks without stopping to rest. This massive dragon is also unsurprisingly superbly adapted to life in the open ocean, being capable of spending days or weeks hunting underwater at a stretch. Like all members of its particular group, the Fathomfin possesses weak jaws that can dislocate themselves and stretch to accommodate large masses of prey and/or larger prey than it would otherwise be able to tackle. The Fathonfin also possesses the accompanying expandable gullet, which is capable of safely storing entire groups of dragons and vikings inside of it... or for that matter storing entire pods of whales, schools of fish, and swarms of krill inside of it. The dragon is capable of storing its catch in its gullet for an extended period of time, often swallowing its catch hours after it actually filtered the water out of its mouth. This dragon is also well known- as are the whale-dragons in general- for having a thick layer of blubber, which it uses as fat reserves, insulation, and buoyancy measure. This blubber also streamlines the Fathomfin's body shape, making it more hydrodynamic and whale like in appearance. This large dragon is- to nobody's surprise- particularly well known for being hunted and butchered by dragon hunters. Fathomfin hides are considered particularly useful for producing extra large tents, large quantities of dragon scale leather bags, clothing, and shields, and otherwise demanding projects that require a ton of dragonscale leather. This dragon is also easily large enough to produce enough meat and blubber to feed an entire dragon hunter tribe for weeks on end, or to last a family for at least a full year dried, salted, or pickled. The Fathomfin's bones and teeth are particularly prized for large scale carvings and implements such as tent poles and oars, especially in places where wood is scarce. This dragon as such relies on echolocation to detect dragon hunter vessels early, and sheer speed and deep dives to avoid getting caught. If they are caught, then dragon hunters face powerful tail and wing slaps, and torrents of fire so nasty that it can ignite the sea around the dragon hunter's ships as well as the ships themselves. This dragon is also known to warn others of its kind of threats through powerful, low pitched calls, the audible part of which is even lower pitched than those of the Deepest Purple Fleshfang and which can be felt by vikings even from even father away. This dragon is generally solitary and reclusive unless disturbed, and can be relentless if provoked or hurt. Training this dragon is theoretically possible, but generally thought to be no easy feat, as they would require enough food to feed an entire village to be properly trained and cared for... and raising the dragon from the egg would theoretically be difficult as well. As such, no Fathomfins have ever been successfully trained, although some have helped friendly vikings who have their own dragons with them or who otherwise have the scent of other dragons on them.
