Edit 2: Okay, the officer on our lawn left, so it looks like they were able to resolve the situation pretty quickly. Yay! Now I gotta run pick up the kids from their school, but I wanted to update this journal so everybody knows we're okay. :D

I should be working on a comic today because I'm behind schedule getting one out... but about an hour ago we noticed a police officer standing on the corner of our lawn. We're in a rent house that corners one of the city's busier streets. The lights were running on his car but the car was just parked at the corner. I looked down the block past him and saw another police cruiser parked at a signal light a block away, also with its lights running.

Normally we would just stay inside and wait for things to calm down... and this is a surprise for us anyway because this is a really calm, middle-class suburban neighborhood. It's not the sort of area where you see much crime at all. About a half-hour later he had moved his cruiser so that it blocks the end of our street at our house. He was still standing in his position, but had pulled a rifle out of his cruiser.

This is the point at which we started getting really concerned because we realized the kids were just about to get out of school and start walking home! I was about to leave down the other end of the street but the officer asked me to stay inside and I noticed there was a cruiser at the other end of our block as well... which was odd because the officer appeared to be facing the main street toward the signal light where I'd seen the other cruiser -- opposite the direction of this new cruiser at the other end of our block.

So here we are with both ends of our block cordoned off by heavily armed police officers and the officer in our yard appears to have turned to face the middle of our block. :O_o: We did call the kids schools and we talked to Alex. The schools apparently were aware of the situation but had been told they should go ahead and let the kids out at the normal time. Alex is going to be walking over to Nick's school, the way she normally walks so she can walk home with Nick. The two of them are going to stay there until I can leave to go pick them up. Thankfully Calli doesn't get out until 4pm, but if the cops aren't gone in the next half-hour we'll have to call Calli's school and ask them to tell her not to walk home either.

Wish us luck! Hopefully nobody will be hurt. :fingerscrossed:

Edit: Tiffany checked the local news who say the police are in a hostage-situation standoff with a man who's already killed someone... so... yeah, really hoping that it doesn't get any worse and that they're able to resolve it soon.

AUUUGH! What a mindfreak of a day! I hope all your family are ok, and other casualties are...minimal?

Yeesh.

Yeah, nobody else was hurt that I know of... canine units caught one of the guys hiding in a shed behind a house on our block. So I count us lucky that we weren't more involved in it!

Woah, scary!0_0 Glad everything's ok in Casa Hooligan!

I think it turned out in the long-run that the "already killed someone" and the "armed" parts of the story weren't true, so it actually wasn't as bad as we thought. But yeah. Real glad everyone's okay here. Thanks, Cara!

Thanks, Anthony! Yeah, the canine units caught one of the guys hiding in a shed behind a house on our block just across the street. Wooh! So I count us pretty lucky to have only been near the problem and not had the canine units in our yard.

I'm glad to hear everything cleared out! It's nerve wracking when you're limited to your house. It sounded like the school was willing to work with the situation. :)

Two days ago someone was stabbed somewhere on our corner.
A week ago, 3 blocks away, was an armed robbery by 4 individuals.
Two weeks ago, a bank was robbed by two individuals.

I live in a nice residential area (not upper class, but nice duplexes and a few apartments).

People are loosing it.

Boy that sounds like an awful lot of crime for a suburban neighborhood.

Thanks, Alecia!

It does doesn't it?

I friend who was at a restaurant that's about a block down had texted me about it. I had no idea it was going on.

Where I'm located is on the fringe of the "suburb" where restaurants, gas stations, and stores start. Is that a suburb?

I'm not sure... I guess there's not really a name for a "twilight" area between city and suburb... the nomenclature seems to imply that there's just dense urban jungle (inner city) and then there's a line where it buts-up against the completely different landscape of relaxed, manicured suburbia... and then another hard line where suburbia meets pastoral "countryside". I've seen a few neighborhoods where there were obviously expensive upper-class houses and then a block or so away there were gas-stations with bars on the window, but I think those are the exception rather than the rule.
