It's just that I appreciate all of the tutorials here on dA that have helped me out, and I want to put a little bit of my own methods back in. This may be one of my more controversial tutorials as of yet. And yet, I'm not here to talk about a traditional writing topic.  This is about attitude.  Specifically, I want to talk about an author's attitude towards their stories and their talent in general. I read a lot of amateur stories on dA, and I do mean a LOT.  But one thing

It's just that I appreciate all of the tutorials here on dA that have helped me out, and I want to put a little bit of my own methods back in. I've run across an odd myth about fictional characters here on good ol' deviantART:  If my character isn't a Mary Sue then I've definitely written a good character.  Sadly, this is not so.  A Mary Sue (see here for more) is just a specific kind of bad character.  Not all bad characters are Mary Sues.  It would be like saying that sinc

Let me get this out of the way:  I only write tutorials if I feel that I have something to add to the topic or if I feel like it's one that few people touch on.  So then why on Earth am I writing about Mary Sues?  Everyone's written about them!  And it's true; this topic has been well-explored in countless places that it seems

First things first; I have a quick, but essential assignment for you.  Read the following three sentences below, out loud: A weird name does not a unique character make. A weird name does not a memorable character make. A weird name does not a good character make. Say it.  Say it twice.  Say i

All right, so I've been thinking about some great feedback I got from my last tutorial about tutorials (there's a link to it in the description).  There are just a lot of things that a tutorial writer can get wrong when trying to educate an audience on a particular topic.   As mainly a writing/art theorie

In my experience, style will either be one of the easiest or one of the hardest things for you to develop as an artist.  I've been there, there is no worse feeling than the crushing realization that your art looks an awful lot like everyone else's.  The weirdest part is that it's really difficult to develop a style of your ow

Snowstorm and Great Writing Resources!

Snowstorm and Great Writing Resources!

So a mini-blizzard has hit up here and I've been stuck inside since 3:00 with nothing to do.  Bored out of my mind, I went on a research binge and I found some awesome resources for those of you that write! These are all name-related resources (mostly USA data, sorry!): HowManyOfMe.com Want to know if a name you've made up for a character is realistic?  Try entering it on this website.  This website will tell you how many people in the USA share that name.  If you get a decent number (maybe over 10?), then you can feel safe in that name being fairly realistic.  After all, at least 10 people have it.  If you get a really low number, don't w

Plot tutorial in the works

Plot tutorial in the works

So I held a poll, and it seems that a lot of people really need a tutorial on plot.  I'm going to do it, but this one may take me a little longer than usual. I too struggle with plot, so I've been reading a couple of books on the subject so that I have some sort of backing for this one.  I can usually do tutorials on character, theme, world-building, cliche, etc. from my gut because those topics make a lot of sense to me and I've done a lot of research on them.  But plot is one of my demons, so I want to make sure I actually know what I'm talking about before I make a tutorial. Additionally, I'd like a little feedback from those of you that

Hey, how are you? :D
You have very good points in your tutorials, you know? Well of course you do...
I like that tutorial of orphan characters, it's so true! It's kind of scary how easily people kill their beloved character's parents... I haven't really thought about it, but yeah it's true. Okay I have done it myself few times but only for that the story would make sense. And that tutorial about flawed characters is also good point, 'cause I don't even know how people can do characters without them. Flaws are so good opportunity to create some drama and make everything make sense and story move forward.

Very nice work!
Thanks for the llama badge :D
Thank you very much for the llama! XD
