My life is stressful right now. I want to complain, but then I remember I'm not a pretty pretty princess snowflake and I suck it up, because things could be going a lot worse *knockonwood*. I was feeling really sorry for myself for a while, but then I just got really tired of listening to myself cry about things that were out of my control. At least most of the stress in my life is either secretly good for me, or something I'm capable of handling.

I'm trying to move to a new city all on my lonesome, on pretty much less money than it takes to buy a burrito in some places. This is my first time living on my own, and it's going to be.... interesting. Come fall, I'll be a full time student with one job and looking for another. Art has, sadly, proven to be a bit of a dead end in the revenue area, so sadly it's going to have to take a back seat to, you know, living. Not that I'm quitting, I just want to make it clear for the four or five people that actually might wonder why I've stopped posting things, or why the webcomic is going to be very irregularly updated for a while.

I'm upset about this. I'm already antsy because I haven't been able to draw as much. But hopefully things will work out. I'm going apartment hunting again on Thursday, so if you're so inclined, I'd heartily appreciate any well wishes or crossed fingers you could spare my way, because I'm really hoping I can actually get my own place before the semester starts, otherwise everything's going to get 10 times more stressful and pressurized very quickly.

Diving into life. Time to brace myself. Here goes.

So I grabbed this from the awesome milqo.

The idea is that I will feature three of my favorite pieces from the galleries of the first 8 people to leave a comment.

The CATCH is that you have to turn around and post the same offer on your journal, and start the list off with ME and three pieces you like from MY gallery. So you actually end up featuring nine.

The idea isn't get get a free feature, but to help spread the art around for everybody involved. It's a great excuse to go gallery diving and maybe discover new art, so it's a lot of fun!

So since I grabbed it from milqo they get the first slot :D

Tuesday starts the beginning of two weeks in hell, aka final weeks. At the moment I'm working on trying to finish my last paper for Shakespeare by the end of Monday. My entire educational career for the year is kind of up in the air, and these next two weeks will be extremely stressful while I try to squeeze my way into the future I'm hoping for.

I know I've been really slow on posting art, and especially on updating Earthbound (earthboundcomic.com), but I just wanted to drop a note to say that as soon as finals end, I will be kicking my artistic butt into high gear. I want to make up for the missed updates in Earthbound by giving you guys two pages a week if possible. I'm not going to guarantee it, really, but I'm going to make it a definite goal. Friday updates will still be promised, only now with the potential for a second update sometime in the week as well.

Guys, I know you're only a small group of people who actively read my comic, but I wanted to say THANK YOU SO MUCH for investing even a moment of your time into Earthbound. I love this comic, and I love telling the story and being involved in the artistic process and seeing how much my art grows and improves even just page to page. But it would just be me talking to myself of no one else gave it time, so I'm really thankful for everyone who takes a moment to give my comic a chance. I know that college has my time and mind right now, but art will always have my heart (awwww look, I rhymed). So I'm going to try and make it up to you this summer. Come what may, whether I get what I'm hoping for or not, I'm going to try and devote this summer to making more Earthbound and more polished art in general. So thank you, guys, for all your patience.

I'll see you after finals.

(Pst! Also, taking commissions that will be worked on after finals as well :D wolfbites.deviantart.com/journ…)

In light of some recent financial emergencies, it's become necessary for me to find new revenues of income. So… commission time!

I'll do fanart, original characters, kink, fursonas, realistic, comic, chibi, and pretty much anything except gore/extreme violence.

Information! (Please see my art references here: urchinmoppet.tumblr.com/post/1…)

Full color, inked: $30 base +some depending on complexity and time. A piece such as the shot of Bree with flowers would be more (around $70) than the piece with Sherlock & John as portal chibis ($30), depending on how much time invested. Custom 3-level adoptables are the same as chibis ($30 for all 3 levels).

Full color, sketched non-chibi's: $15 base +some depending on complexity & time.

Full color, chibi: $10 base +some depending on complexity and time. In this case, the more chibis asked for means more complexity. Single/one-level completed adoptables start at this level.

Grey scale, inked:  $20 base +some depending on complexity and time. In this case, complexity depends on more characters and if background is wished for, etc.

Sketched, monochrome: $5 base + some for complexity and time. More characters, background, etc.

Sketched, no color/shading: $5 flat

If you are interested, please email me at earthboundcomic@gmail.com.

And even if you can't commission me, you can help out by (please, please, please) reblogging this post on tumblr: urchinmoppet.tumblr.com/post/1…. I really, really appreciate anyone who has helped support my art, and who will help me by supporting this. Thank you ever so much, guys!

So after yesterday's journal, I realized that I wanted to give some recognition to dA artists that I adore and think need more love. I watch each one for different reasons, but all of them are great artists and fantastic people. Please go look through their galleries!

:iconunderanangel:

I adore UNDERANANGEL 's use of color and composition to create a specific mood for each piece. Also, smouldering sex eyes. Just saying.

Eban Trooper New Year

:iconthepuddingmolester:

Jues is a great friend, a mad genius, and connoisseur of beanpole people. I watch him because he's my friend AND because he always comes up with fun new concepts in his art. (First Portal/Sherlock crossover fanart ever as far as we know!)

Portal meets Sherlock beanpole Jules Sherlock Signal

:icontehkiah:

Another artists whose use of color fills me with happy, TehKiah has a light and whimsical style that reminds me of all the gorgeous childrens books from when I was a kid. Simple, but beautiful!

Summer Paveline Path

:iconrobinrone:

I've been watching RobinRone ever since early days in the Metanoia fandom, and reading her webcomics. She's a great storyteller and an artist who strives for growth, and it shows. And she's ridiculously prolific. Good god, I mean seriously, how does she do it???

Mythic Tamuran Shadowbinders

:iconkatasauras:

I started watching Katasauras because of her Labyrinth fanart, but her lovely sense of lighting and color kept me sticking around. Her style and characters are unique, and well worth the watch.

Poster Thanks Coy

:iconanruiukimi:

Liz is another close friend, denius, and all around wonderful person. She's a fantastic writer, and she makes these awesome bead sprites to boot! So much cool pack in to one person! Make sure to check out her writing too.

Sailor Moon Assorted More Assorted

:iconjulesrivera:

A relatively new addition to my watch, I started reading julesrivera's webcomic Valkyrie Squadron after listening to her interview on Webcomics Beacon. Another wonderful storyteller and colorist, I love her use of strange and complimentary colors to really make things pop on the page! Check out her art, and then go check out her comic.

----------

I was supposed to go to bed like an hour ago, but when I tried, it was too hot and I just flipped around like a fish out of water for 20 minutes and then gave up. Even with the AC on I can't get cool, I retain heat like a rock in the desert, and it just kind of radiates back all night. I hate inland summers. Anyway, so back on the computer I be.

Lately I've been really frustrated with my online life, and being the self therapist that I am, I tried to figure out the root of my feelings. Am I upset because I feel like I need to be popular? Do I need validation from strangers to feel like a good artist? No, not really. I'm pretty confident in my art and happy with both my successes and the challenges I'm working to overcome in my own style of drawing and storytelling. On a purely personal level, I'm very happy lately with my own artistic growth and the way I've been able to (mostly) match up my inner vision with my ability to produce the drawings or story I want to tell. I don't need strangers to tell me I'm good, because I know I am. Not perfect, true, and I could certainly be both better and more productive, but I'm growing as an artist and enjoying it as I go, and that's not a bad place to be artistically.

So if I don't need other people to tell me I'm good, then why do I feel so frustrated with the lack of feedback from others? I don't need validation through numbers, but somehow the lack of real feedback has been getting to me. I feel like I'm doing things well lately, but no one's looking. I'm finally in a place where I'm proud of what I'm doing, and I've been more productive than I have in years (even if my level of productivity nowhere nears the level of some artists) but it feels like the better I get the less people say. And I wish I knew why that really bothers me.

Is this just a round-about way of wanting to be popular? I really don't like to think I'm one of those people. I don't need a million pageviews or a thousand favorites or 500 comments all saying "cool!". That's boring. But is it wrong or stupid to want to be noticed more, not for the numbers but because you're genuinely proud of what you've been doing, and want to know what people think? Is there a difference between wanting more feedback and wanting to be popular? I personally think there's a difference, but I'm honestly curious about the dichotomy that seems to exist in peoples opinions on attention and popularity. People seem to be split between the ones who think it's fine, and people who think anyone who admits to wanting attention are somehow lesser artists or sell-outs.

Do you guys ever feel this way? Or do you think it's stupid?

I'd also love to do some kind of scientific study on there can be two people at about the same artistic level and productivity, and one can be infinitely more popular than the other. The fickleness of the internet is truly fascinating. I mean, where's the scientific journal articles dedicated to growth patterns of memes?

This is probably all just really stupid and one of those posts that should be deleted in the morning. But I'll post it anyway.

I had a really great time at AX, and we sold really well at the con! Every single plushie is gone! Thanks to everyone who bought them at the con, it was great meeting you guys, and I appreciate the support.

For those of you who expressed an interest in commissioning a Lovecat, here's some pricing info.

The pricing for custom LOVECATS works like this:

* Basic cat (one color body with eyes, nose, and ears)- $15
---- (If you want an eye color which I do no have in stock there will be an additional $2 charge for material)
* Additional colors & 'markings' on cat- $5 per color
---- (Extremely complicated markings will incur an additional charge based on complexity & time needed to make it)
* Clothes- $10 per item of clothing
---- (this does not include capes such as the ones found on Batcat, which are only an additional $3; I do NOT do shoes on Lovecats)
* Blanket Stitching around all edges- $10

EXAMPLE PHOTOS of my Lovecats are constantly being added to our Tumblr blog: gogolovecats.tumblr.com/

So an example of a commission price for a Batcat would be:
$15 (basic gray body)
+ $3 (cape)
+ $5 (add color: black - the yellow markings, in THIS case, are not charged, but this is not always so)
= $23+shipping.

If you are interested in commissioning a Lovecat, please email me at earthboundcomic[a t]gmail.com or you can message me here on deviantart :D

Thanks again guys!

So, first, I have my car. I won't post photos (here) but it's both a huge relief and a new source of stress (financially), but I'm really glad the search is done.

Second, Anime Expo info: xViolinistBAKA and I will be at AX this year with a table at artist alley! Row 5 Row D, please search for S. Phillips on your program~! All together, we'll be selling plushies, prints, CD's of awesome violin versions of fan music, sketches, and on-the-spot commissions. So please stop by! No prints from me this year, didn't have the time or money, but hopefully at the next con I manage to get a table at I'll have something cool (I'm hoping to do some work this summer on stuff for Gallifrey next year).

So my to-do list looks like this now:

June:
- Work on plush crafts to sell
- Work on crafts to sell
- work of crafts to sell

If I ever finish all these plushies, I'll also work on some EB pages. Otherwise:

July-August:
- Earthbound
---EB buffer of at least 20 pages
-----Once buffer requirement is met, start posting 2x a week.
---Work on the EB bible, since I really need one.
- Write outline for To Market
- Various arty things
- Plushies (if people want to buy them)

I'm going to try and take advantage of my newly acquired and short-lived free time to try to get Earthbound on to a twice-a-week schedule. Unless I find a job, which I kind of need, since I'm not going to have any kind of income for the next four-ish months. I'm also thinking about working on a short-story comic that's been brewing in my head for a while called "To Market". We'll see how that goes too.

Wish me luck!

So I'm coming up on the last week of the semester. Gawd, I feel like it's been forever, seriously. This weekend needs to see me cramming for my finals in math, Britlit, Americanlit, and polisci, because THIS SH*T IS GOING DOWN NEXT WEEK YO.

And after that I'm FREEE :D

Well, kinda. I have so much to do to get ready for AX it is NOT even funny. AND I'm also car shopping which, if you've never been car shopping with an extremely limited budget and no car of your own to go look at said cars, it's. Well. It's an experience. A hateful, painful, long, drawn out, frustrating experience. You will not BELIEVE how many scam artists are out there. There's something about selling a car that turns even a really nice, super sweet and thoughtful person into a money-grubbing, screw-em-all-and-take-the-cash minion from hell.

Ok, getting off track.

Anyway, my plans art-wise after finals are as follows:

June:
- Work on Earthbound prints for AX (Postcard print, business card).
- Bookmarks (maybe)
- Work on plush crafts to sell

I feel kind of frustrated that I don't really have time to do much fanart to sell, or the short comic I wanted to do, but I feel like it's really important to try and get people interested in Earthbound. But if I find I have time, I'm going to try and do something. I don't really know what, I'm way out of the loop.

I only heard about this today but it makes me really upset:

A few weeks ago, Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei was arrested and has since been "disappeared" by the Chinese government (www.washingtonpost.com/world/c… ), along with many other activists such as bloggers, journalists, other artist and the like. I first heard about Ai Weiwei last year, when a news article about his exhibit "Sunflower Seeds" (www.guardian.co.uk/artanddesig…) caught my eye and, after reading about it and seeing photos, caught my heart. His dedication, vision and artistry are awesome, and his activism in the face of a repressive government is inspirational.

Please take a moment to read up about Ai Weiwei, view some of his art, and read about some of his activism. Then, after you've fallen in love with his work (as I'm sure you will), please take a moment to sign this petition: www2.avaaz.org/en/artists_for_…

I am not anti-Chinese as the Chinese Government has, according to some articles, claimed activists like Ai Weiwei and his supporters are. The Chinese Government seems to think the involvement of Westerners concerned over this violation of human rights is the Wests attempts to begin an overthrow of the communist party. I don't think that's what this is about. This is about people recognizing the need and self-evident right of humans to self expression, and the violation of that right when that self expression is deterred, punished or in any other way cut off. I believe simply that no government has the right to arrest and detain their citizens for expressing criticism or discontent, and that's what this is about.

Please spread the word about this. Artists should stick together.

So I just registered our table for Anime Expo's Artist Alley.

(By "ours" I mean :iconxviolinistbaka: & I).

I never realized how very bureaucratic it was to have an alley table! Or maybe it's just become that way? Applying for my sellers permit by mail tomorrow, and trying to figure out what I can and can't sell...It will be interesting. I'm thinking about selling bookmarks, small prints, and possibly a few crafty things if I find the time to make them. Plus I'm hoping to complete a mini-comic book to print & sell too.

For fandom things (bookmarks and maybe crafty things), I plan to focus on Pokemon, Hetalia, and possibly Sherlock & Doctor Who (last two are iffy, because I love them but I don't know how they'll sell at AX).

The rest (prints and some bookmarks) will be Original stuff, mostly focusing on Earthbound and promoting it to new readers.

What do you usually buy when you go to AX? Is there something specific you look for? What tends to catch your eye?

Anyway, is anyone going to AX this year? Are you going to have a table? Let me know so I can be on the look out for you!!

PEOPLE WHO DO WEB...STUFF...

What's the internet etiquette about asking about a link exchange? Or telling people you're linking them from your website? I always feel really awkward about this kind of thing, like I'm annoying or weird or good god who would ever consider wanting to link to my stuff, you know? So I'm not sure how you go about it without sounding like desperate or a creeper....

So I think a while ago I started referring to something I called my secret project. If you've been paying any sort of attention whatsoever, I'm pretty sure it's not really much of a secret. But with only 5ish pages to go and some website work, I thought is was time for a press release of sorts.

THE UNVEILING OF MY SUPER SECRET PROJECT IN 3..2..1...

It's Earthbound.

As if you didn't already know :)

I honestly started working on this forever ago, and if you count previous attempts in both literature and the former webcomic version or simply just sketching the characters, then it's been something like 10 or 11 years. It's such my baby project, but I think that this time around it's here to stick. I'm happy with my art style (though I'm open to growth) and I'm technologically & financially able to do the webcomic without too much trouble (which was what I was running into in the previous version, with no money, no real computer or computer skills, and no way of getting my drawing off the page and onto a website in a timely manner). School, while still very time consuming, isn't so time consuming that I can't work on this at all, like it used to be.

Anyway, this is just me saying that if you're interested at all, please keep an eye out on my journal & in my dA submissions for the announcement of the first update. I'm aiming for mid February, but to be realistic it will most likely be in early March.

In other news, no one caught the kiriban :( And also, thanks to my friend Liz, I'm now thoroughly addicted to TopGear UK *love*

I hate to sound desperate, but if you've had any inclination to commission me at some time, now would be great. The family situation is looking a little dire (completely broke, that is) AND Christmas is coming. Unfortunately, as much as I look, I can't seem to get a job. Anyway, so, pimping myself out. Please consider a commission from me :)

M A T E R I A L S [&] I N F O R M A T I O N

At the moment I am only offering digital drawings. Other materials may be made available in the future. All drawings are emailed to you at original file size, which is quite large for anything other than chibis, meaning printing it out -should you so choose- is easy.

Definitions:
CHIBIS is pretty self descriptive.
SKETCHES includes full-body sketches or simply busts/torso and up.
BUSTS are from the shoulders and up
TORSO are from the waist up
FULL BODY are the entire body
OTHER are, well, other. See examples.

BACKGROUNDS are NOT being offered at this time for any of these.

Please provide me with plenty of references if you are requesting fandom art. If it is OC art, please give me a VERY detailed description and/or your own character art (if you don't draw very well, then a description will be needed).

I will NOT draw acts of gore or violence. I WILL draw sexually themed drawings if so requested (except shota).

Things like the first two examples, while technically busts, tend to take me a lot longer (the Sherlock/John piece took me 10 hours all together, while the Russia/America took me 5) so they follow the same guidelines as FULLBODY.

The bottom two examples, stand alone bits like that, also take me a good bit of time, and therefore cost the same as BUSTS.
