Description
The Earth of the 12th millennium is a very different place. Life as we know it today has disappeared. The Earth is now host to an entirely new ecosystem, which is completely alien to what came before. Some of these new lifeforms carry the gift of sentience. Two such beings are depicted here.
To the right stands a Crimson Poet. who is faced by a sessile Tower Smith.
The Crimson Poets are a species which has adapted to an ecological niche similar to ants. Their societies are built like anthills, with one individual giving birth to an entire community. These hermaphroditic individuals are known as the Composers. Their genderless offspring are known as Lyricists. Their societies have spread across the land once known as Europe.
The Tower Smiths are all sessile, yet they weren't always in such a state.
Their species was the first to build a civilization after humankind's disappearance. After being exiled from their native habitat by a species of sentient machines they created, they settled Europe. They used the native Crimson Poets as slaves - as replacements for their former mechanical servants. Eventually, the Poets rebelled and used a powerful supernatural artifact against them. This would turn their entire species into sessile animals. This event marked the end of their civilization, and a new beginning for the Crimson Poets.
Many Crimson Poets have sympathy for their former masters, seeing their fall as a necessary evil. The Poet depicted here is one such individual. They are burning a special mixture of resins and levees which is believed to soothe the Tower Smiths. While no one is sure if the Tower Smiths are still sentient, many still see them as being worthy of care.
