And here it is! The painting I spent a shameful amount of time creating!
The Flight of the Alicorn

It was a battle; I was flung far from my comfort zones. But I have benefited from it, I think.

I am pleased to say, that this will be the book cover to *Prancypants printed Flight of the Alicorn fanfiction! It was an honour.

Here's a guide overlay showing where the front, back and side folds will be: [link]

Here's the preparation sketches I did, and half the reason it took so long. Warning, huge files.

As usual, any kind of comment is welcome, critique or otherwise.

I just finished reading the book. I had to take off the cover since I was worried I was going to ruin it.
Although I kept wonder when this happened in the book, like that first thunder storm I was like "oh so this is where the cover art happens, but wait why are there wonderbolts in there? And where are all those others on the airship o.0"

So ya really enjoyed the book, like the technique you used to light this picture, I had a few people make a double take when they saw the book lying near by and were asking to be sure if that was My little pony xD

It's been a while since I read it myself, and painted this, so I don't quite remember exactly.  But I think *Prancypants didn't mind if there were a few things not entirely correct?  You may want to ask him yourself.  I think the goal was to just make the cover look as epic as possible.

But thanks, I'm glad you liked the book and my artwork!  I've always liked Chiaroscuro lighting/painting style, even if it's not exactly that.  At first I wasn't sure that was the direction *Prancypants wanted but he loved it.  But I thought it'd work considering the light sources and how striking it would look.
And I love that reaction from people you describe. That is awesome.

oh no you did you get the cover right to the story, it was just near the end wear the cover art actually takes place.
I just like guessing when I'm reading to see when the art is actually happening in the book
WizardWannabe's avatar
Oh right, yeah, I like to do that too, especially with Terry Pratchett books.

I haven't ever read any of the books, but I have seen the movies for "color of magic" and "the hog father"
Probably should find those and finally read them

I'd recommend them above anything else.  I love Pratchetts' books.
Also, his current artist for the books is fantastic; Paul Kidby.

Hmmm I guess I'll have to find a copy and the time to read them

You regret it! Soon you'll have blasted through all 40 or so books, haha!

I do wish you drew more pictures like this, dear.
WizardWannabe's avatar
Thanks, me too.
But life has been a little pressing at the moment. A lot of my time has been trying to get a job, with little success, which is just highly demotivating.
Even so, I wish I had been more productive.

Unequivocally, I'm not the most efficacious either.

Having read the Flight of the Alicorn, I must say that this piece of artwork is absolutely spectacular.  Just the sheer level of detail and car put into it is astounding.  From the rain, to the background Wonderbolts fighting the Gryphons, to the guns, to even the characters themselves (who by the way also look awesome), this entire picture is a masterpiece.
I am curious, did you use Photoshop to edit this?
WizardWannabe's avatar
Thank you for the praise!

Yeah I used Photoshop to paint it all, CS5. Took ages, but it was worth it.

How long is ages, weeks or months?
WizardWannabe's avatar
Best part of about 2-3 months.  It was the most detailed, largest painting I'd ever done, and required a lot of research.

Spectacular! I can't wait to read the fanfiction! From the look of the cover, it should be interesting. (I don't believe in don't judge a book by it's cover.)

I can picture this song going perfectly with it! [link]

Thanks!
It is interesting; a very enjoyable fanfic! I really do think it's one of the best in the fandom.

And good music selection, it does fit nicely, and it's one of my favourites of Aviators!

It's super gorgeous and perfectly captures the epic scope of the story, but I have to say Buckaroo's neck looks oddly long.
WizardWannabe's avatar
Thanks.
Yeah, there are a few bits of the painting that, in my inexperience, I wasn't 100% sure about. Buck's neck one of them. I reasoned it was just the way he was standing, and that he is big and strong and has a thick neck. Also, it framed around the gun better, but I probably should have taken that into account.
Anyway, thanks for commenting.

I only even noticed it because I adore staring at this coverart for long periods of time. :3 Rarity and Bluebood's expressions were so unique, yet in character and captivating, that I had to give the story a read.
WizardWannabe's avatar
Ah no worries.
I'm very happy you began reading it due to my painting, are you enjoying it? You should definitely tell the author if you are, he'd appreciate it.

Holy crap dude! O_O
I think I have to watch you...

Thanks, watch away!
Though I haven't been very productive of late.
