Curiosity Shop
It's a shop I must have walked past a million times before, but have barely noticed until now, and have never thought to enter. A nondescript, little, drab brown brick building, crammed between a hair salon and an upholstery store, with a tiny window display offering an assortment of forgettable items that are of no interest to me. But I have some extra time on my hands today and decide to take a quick peek.
The interior is cool and dark, and it takes a moment for my eyes to adjust. An overpowering rose scent hangs thickly in the air; nearly enough to turn me away. Instead I continue further into the store, eyes scanning the shelves for anything interesting. Indeed, there are a great variety of items – and yet none whatsoever appeal to me.
"Can I help you?"
I look up to see an elderly woman behind a counter. She looks vaguely startled, and I wonder when she last saw a customer enter her shop.
"Just browsing," I reply.
I make a full circle of the place and confirm that there is ind

4th of July
The Fireworks bloomed in the night sky over the stadium. Each blast ricocheted off the surrounding hills of Echo Park and thudded heavily in her chest; adding to her own heartbreak.
Bright, colored stars, hearts and willow trees rained down upon her, each burst casting a red glow over the hilltops where, for an instant, strange shadows leapt to life.
She was surrounded by friends. As a group, they had made the unsteady hike up the steep, winding hill to a spot with the best view. But she still felt terribly alone and tried to ignore how everyone seemed to be in pairs, arms and legs tangled on blankets, romance in the air, mingled with the faint scent of gunpowder and the smell of spilled beer.
Her divorce was still a fresh wound, and she didn't know when she'd be ready to date again. Probably never, given the drawn out and sad relationship that had just ended. It was too painful to consider. She felt broken. Used up.
She had since learned to live alone; to even enjoy her solitude. To t

As Fernando looked upon the tiny, shriveled baby lying in Mama's arms, he knew he was obligated to love it. It was his new little sister, after all. And yet, all he could feel was resentment rising like bile in his throat.
The baby almost did not survive the difficult transition from the womb to life. She was frail and sickly and looked more like a hairless rat than a human being. Mama, however, seemed unaware of this fact. The force of her love filled the room. Even Papa seemed to have fallen under a trance as he smiled foolishly at his new daughter.
Fernando left the room and wandered outside to sulk. The abrupt sound of shuffling startled him and he realized that Alfie was sitting on a crate nearby, playing cards.
Alfie smirked when Fernando turned to face him. He was 17 now, a true man, but he still had a boyish way about him. "Why so glum, little brother? Can't you see how happy Mama is to finally have a daughter?"
Alfie's remark struck Fernando like a barb. Did this mean he and h

The Last Flea
The girl crouched in the shadow of a building, her dog, Flea, at her side. The earth trembled as three search copters roared overhead, blades cutting the air with dreadful thwacks. The girl buried her face in Flea's black fur and shivered. It smelled musty like dirt and mildew and dried pine, yet it comforted her, and her nausea passed.
The copters rumbled into the distance and faded away. The girl and Flea were safe for now, but the copters would be back. They always came back.
"Let's go," the girl told Flea. He tilted his head and scratched vigorously behind his ear. She tugged at his collar and they sprinted across the clearing of the village square back into the bordering forest. It was the safest place to be because it offered the most cover, but it was also the worst because it was cold, dark and wet, and there was no food. Which is why they had to venture into town to steal scraps. She had tried to get the dog to wait for her in the safety of the forest while she infiltrated the

Tania del Rio
Artist | Professional
United States
My name is Tania del Rio and I’m a graduate of the Minneapolis College of Art and Design with a BFA in animation. In 2003, my manga entry, Lovesketch, was selected to appear in TOKYOPOP’s Rising Stars of Manga Anthology, Volume 2.

This soon led to my next gig, working for Archie Comics as the writer and artist of Sabrina the Teenage Witch, a monthly comic that was given a shoujo manga makeover in 2004. Over the course of 5 years I completed 42 issues, ending the series with issue #100.

I’ve also done additional work for Archie, such as art and writing on Sonic the Hedgehog, Josie and the Pussycats, Cheryl Blossom, and stories featuring the rest of the Archie gang. I’ve also written for Marvel (Spider Man/Araņa Special: The Hunter Revealed), and edited a book called Mangaka America, a gallery and tutorial book featuring some of the hottest emerging North American manga artists of the time.

I had a popular webcomic,, which is now available as a 400-page book. I will soon be re-launching my webcomic as “My Newly Blonde Life”, which will be about my life as a single woman.

I also run a business with award winning graphic designer Will Staehle of We make and sell Victorian-inspired art, stories, and merch at

I currently reside in Los Angeles with my two corgis.
I can be contacted at if you want to get in touch! I’m always interested in hearing about new projects, commissions, and opportunities!

I'm excited to announce that tomorrow, April 14th, I will be a guest and speaker at the Wildcat Comic Con in Williamsport, PA.

My schedule is as follows:

9:00am-10:30am "Creating Your Story in Manga vs. Western-style Comics: A workshop with Tania del Rio" Room 102 in the Library

10:30am-11:30am"Creating Your Webcomic" Panel in room 201 of Alvin C. Bush campus center

2:00pm-3:00pm "Living and creating in the deviantART world" in the Auditorium of the George S. Klump academic center.

I'm looking forward to it!

In other news, I've been quite busy with quite a few different projects.

ARCHIE COMICS: I just finished a new script for Archie Comics that was a lot of fun. I can't say what it is just yet, but it's unlike anything you've ever seen in the Archie universe!

HUSBANDS: I'm also keeping busy with a lot of freelance art and design. I'm currently working for television writer Jane Espenson and internet personality Brad "Cheeks" Bell on art, design, and website management for the World's First Marriage Equality, Husbands the Series. It's a wonderful web-show and they're currently raising money for season 2 via Kickstarter!

MY NEWLY BLONDE LIFE: I have a new web comic called My Newly Blonde Life about my life as a single woman. You can read new stories every wednesday at the entertainment site, WeYü

My Newly Blonde Life

For those of you with an iphone or ipad, you can download and read my entire 42-issue run of manga Sabrina the Teenage Witch through the Archie Comics App!

For those of you who aren't familiar with the series:

Sabrina thought her life was hard enough juggling between her mortal high school and her magical charm school. But when she starts discovering that she has unique powers, and that the Magic Council isn't too happy about the ways she's been using these new skills, things really start getting tough!

To add to the mix, there's two guys in her life who are as different as night and day: shy, serious mortal Harvey, and daring, bishonen wizard Shinji. Sabrina is currently with Harvey but can't help but feel jealous when Shinji shows up with a mysterious new girlfriend named Hemlock.

Meanwhile, Harvey has no idea Sabrina is a witch, while Shinji is currently planning a rebellion against the Queen of the magic realm to avenge his dead parents.

And even though she initially tries to stay out of it, Sabrina gets sucked into the political intrigue and realizes the Magic Realm Queen is hiding a terrible secret that will surely lead to the downfall of the entire Magic Realm.

But will helping Shinji with his cause betray Sabrina's own aunt who is a member of the Magic Council? And will Harvey ever realize Sabrina is a witch?

The answers may surprise you...

I am a major fan of your work on Sabrina. I recently bought "Sabrina: The Magic Within" volumes 1 and 2 and have not been able to put them down! I have read and reread them, and I CANNOT wait for the release of volume 3, it is just simply amazing! Though, while I can't wait, at the same time it will be sad when I finally finish the series and see what happens, cause then I'll have no clue where to direct my next obsession.

I loved the live action series, but I like this comic even more. The love triangle between Sabrina Harvey and Shinji just makes the plot so in depth. Thanks for making this series!
