This shot is far from being the average, everyday photo and I'm finding it hard to explain the many reasons why I believe this shot to be truly outstanding and how much I like it.

First of all, you are going to need your good dose of luck in order to come up with such an interesting ice pattern and subject for a photo, as frozen water isn't guaranteed to create the captivating textures you so beautifully captured here.

The main subject of your picture seems to be the withered flower that was trapped in the ice and that you placed on the left side of your frame. This trick alone adds dynamism to the composition, but you didn't stop there, and using a rather large depth of field, you included many sharp details of the ice layer: I can see each wrinkle in the ice's unique texture and all the air bubbles of various sizes that were caught in it are just amazing. They combine into this elegantly random arrangement that turns simple air into a decorative element and I know I'm repeating myself, but I'm still in disbelief for how sharp everything is.

Another element that adds up to the beauty of this photo is the contrast between the warm tone of the flower and the cold hue of everything else, yet the colours aren't oversaturated, which helps our eyes perceive more details while they aren't being distracted by too much colour and allows us to appreciate the true charm of this wintry-themed capture.

Summing it all up in a sentence: your talent and skill transpire from this shot quite strongly. Composition, colour, lighting and sharpness all contribute to a stunning piece of artwork.

I'll start from the subject you chose to capture: ants aren't an easy target for a photographer, as they're tiny and hardly stay still, but I think you did a great job here, as you were able to take a sharp shot of an ant "in action" as well as the moss immediately surrounding it. Your focus is good: we can see many details of the ant's head, legs, and body. I just wish the ant's eye and mandibles had been that little tad sharper.

Besides, I like how you composed your photo, with the subject on the left side of the frame and oriented towards the center of the image. There's also this curve created by the moss and highlighted by the dark patch in the background behind the ant that makes the photo more dynamic and adds impact the the whole image.

I also appreciate the colour contrast you artfully created between the ant's warm brown tone and the cold blue of the moss all around it. Unfortunately, the small green areas that are still visible in certains parts of the ant's body betray the effect. This artistic choice could have benefited from a different editing method for the green colour of the moss, such as a selective colour correction filter to have full control on all green pixels.

Last but not least, your timing to press the shutter and freeze this moment was great, since the ant's position suggests it is actually looking into what must have looked like a huge, dark abyss to this tiny insect. And in your photo, lighting, colour and depth of field make it appear to be an abyss to the viewer, as well. Your title of choice - an apt one - also suggests that and on the whole, your photo is a brilliant capture of an often underestimated creature that shows a good use of your equipment for macro photography, as well as a careful study of light and composition.
It's deep down there
Thank you for your critique! I'm glad that you like my photograph and I agree that it's not exactly the most original shot ever. I don't know about how other rodent owners take photos of their critters, but I can say that gerbils never stay still when they're awake. Even when they stand on their hind legs and you think that they're still, their little muzzle and whiskers are still moving.
So, the moment they're nibbling on something is probably one of your best chances to get a sharp, well focused shot, unless you have some powerful equipment for difficult shooting conditions of course.

Anyway, I'm happy that you enjoyed the impact and vision of the picture! ^^
