Shots in the Dark - a Gears 5 short fic(un-edited)
They infiltrated by storm.
It was a smooth drop, right on target. Their pods fragmented without error. All systems green. Eight tin soldiers rose in unison against the fury of Sera. A torrent of dust and gravel blew away their pods. They braced against the current, and a strobe of lightning cast their shadows over the cliffs.
"Bots deployed. Dropship’s back above the windflare. Getting interference on the live feeds."
Nine hundred kilometers away, a lieutenant's eyes jagged up and down, left and right, across four separate screens. The keyboard at his desk was sleek and spotless as his armor. A box of wipes sat half empty beside photos of a wife, two children, a dog.
Another lieutenant sat in the next chair over. Her teeth flashed in the light of her monitors.
"Minimal. Bots are fine. Deploy the beacon."
A twisting riftworm of fire was bearing down on them. They ignored the threat. One bot crouched while another unlimbered a package from its back. With steel fingers

Critiques

There's a great sense of kinetic intensity to this one thanks to the particle effects. One can easily imagine a storm of nearly invisib...

I've reached the point in my learning journey where I'm ready to focus on gesture practice. This comes in the form of a simple character sketch every day. They'll be low detail, nothing special, and I'm unlikely to upload any sketch that spoils my personal projects. But I will try to upload a sketch a week.

There will be times when I'm stuck and can't think of something specific to draw. I'd appreciate it if you could leave your suggestions for poses or actions I could draw in such an event.

I'll probably draw a lot of Gears of War sketches in the process, but I want to make all these sketches from imagination. Maybe with one or two reference images to springboard off of. Expect the process to be choppy at first, and I probably won't shade any of these.

In the meantime, I've attended my first session of Life After Loss group therapy. It's a group my grandma went to in the past, and she's accompanying me because these issues are still affecting her too. It hurts, very much so, but it also feels good to be surrounded by other people who are going through similar losses. Admittedly, I did struggle to pay attention throughout much of the session, but it was only an introductory session. And I did realize partway through that a major part of my life is about helping other people deal with grief and other struggles. I was able to share the generalities of what happened with Jimmy, and that's easy to talk about, but I'm more comfortable helping other people than I am with attending my guilt and fatigue issues. Inevitably I must deal with both, and I know my own pain will never go away, but hopefully it will become a platform from which I can give stability to other people.

Dungeons & Dragons continues to be a major boon in my life. I might do some very simple comic practice using some scenes from the game I'm in. I'm blessed to have these folks as my first D&D group.

FANG GREATSPEAR - DnD 5e homebrew concept
A mastercraft weapon made by the premier smith of Mistmoore to replace an aged and broken greatspear. Since the smith was an orc, my racist old Cavalier wanted no part of him. But he was convinced to pay for the weapon anyway. After briefly borrowing the Viscount's old greatspear, Sgt. Igist Vin returned to claim the Fang Greatspear on the eve of the Battle of Mistmoore. Sgt. Igist Vin liked it so much (despite the orc runes) that he convinced himself it was actually made by the orc's halfling assistant. The "field-expedient sling" is a recent addition, made using leather strips, a sword, and a Nat 20 roll. Sgt. Vin is, if nothing else, a consummate veteran soldier who can make do with scraps.

This upgraded greatspear has already impaled numerous orcs and ogres, but it soon had the butt snapped off when Sgt. Vin attacked Camus (the half-orc party leader). Don't mess with Camus. Camus stopped Igist AND Igist's horse AND the butt of Igist's spear with one hand and a Nat 20.

Greatspears are homebrew weapons made for me by Croswynd, my GM. They have all the best stats of a spear and a lance, with only one drawback: they can't be used one-handed except from horseback. And even then, one-handed reduces the damage.

Reach: 10 feet
Damage: 1d10 (two hands) 1d8 (one hand) + Strength mod

"Extra Attack +2," "Polearm Master," "Great Weapon Fighter," "Hold the Line," "Unwavering Mark," "Warding Maneuver," "Mounted Combatant," and "ACTION SURGE" are just some of the abilities that make Sgt. Vin a force to be reckoned with. Enemies who seek to close the distance soon find themselves locked down, immobilized, and filled with holes before they can attack. Every gap in their armor, every misstep, every blink of an eye is another opening for Vin to exploit. His weapons blur into grey and red streaks, backed with merciless speed and technique. Enemies who assault Sgt. Vin's allies risk drawing more powerful special attacks from him, or having their attacks completely blocked if Vin is nearby. All of this combined with the world's greatest horse allows Sgt. Vin to kite enemies around the battlefield, before charging in atop his mount to deal maximum shock and awe.

And if you thought all that was crazy, just wait until you hear about Sgt. Vin's horse. His horse is amazing. His horse is Awakened. His horse is a level 6 Battlemaster with hoverboard horseshoes. His horse's name is Sonofabitch the Second. His horse is amazing (and quite friendly, despite the name).

Camus Egann - Bastard of Mistmoore DnD
"You're doin me a concern, boah..."

Camus Egann is the property of Sgt Grub :iconsgtgrub: as his Dungeons & Dragons character. He's the leader of the Bastards of Mistmoore, a misfit band of adventurers turned tight-knit guild leaders of heroes. I've been privileged to follow his career from afar for two years. And a few months back I was invited to join their game. I'm looking forward to drawing everyone's characters. This portrait is only the first taste.

What followed was a truly fantastic fantasy battle, the likes of which are apparently rare even in the D&D community. It was years in the making. Ogres were heaving orcs up onto the walls. It was worthy of a Brandon Sanderson novel's climax.

BTW, that hat is black remorhaz leather.

Turns out this plz looks just like me: :iconcrybabyplz:

Hey there, I'm a growing artist who used to be a farmer. I'm not ready yet, but I should be. And I will be.

I grew up on Calvin & Hobbes, graduated to Gears of War, found delight in just about everything fictional, and (fair warning) I just so happen to like My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. I've introduced my kid brother to all of these, and while he thinks Pinkie Pie is just about the funniest thing ever, he much prefers chainsawing his way through Locust hordes. Proud of that lad.

I miss him. He was the most important person in my life, and I failed him. He's gone.

As for what I do, I've been drawing since the day I could hold a pencil. I also write when I have spare time. Soon I will take consistent commissions again. And start my webcomic. Until then, I draw my own concept art and try to limit my worldbuilder syndrome.

Remember that if you don't like what you see, you can always look elsewhere.
