I sat down at my computer last Thursday night
with the full intention of writing THAT POEM. Oh, don't
play dumb. You know what THAT POEM is. We all know
what THAT POEM is. You with the cigarette train-tracks
charting your eternal drift to nowhere
on the insides of your arms, you
with the sludge of alcohol dripping thick & brown through
veins swollen & slow & pussy as zombies, you
with the eight children whose faces you can't remember
& the husband in the Hamptons whose name you sometimes forget
& the lover who never seems to come around as much as you pay him to – you
all know what THAT POEM

is. It's the rhythm beating a dull staccato in your skull
when you've taken something to take the edge off, the weary shadows sinking senseless
into the black-slung cradles hiding underneath your
bloodshot eyes. It's the weight of the gun & the way its metal feels
when you push it against the squelching skin of your skull – not to kill yourself, just to feel it,
to know you could. This was the poem that I was going to write, this was THAT POEM – the thoughts
you were thinking in that last second before you let go of the trigger, only
better than you could've thought them, better
than I could've thought them, better
than anyone could've thought them. This was THAT POEM, the poem that doesn't so much come
from you as much as be ripped  out by the screaming universe itself, when somehow for a second
you seem tuned to the right frequency & the language of winds & tides
makes sense. This was THAT POEM, the poem that lights like Semtex, like heroin, like
the dead dry crinkling vines scratching outwards
against the bottom of your ribcage, the ones you can feel poking you
when you breathe in too deeply
& remember where the scars came from. This was THAT POEM, the poem that falls
through the hollow spaces in our freezing, bird-thin bones
& clangs like a coin when it hits the bottom, showing us all just how deep
the wells of emptiness run. This was THAT POEM, the poem that reminds you
that there are worlds blooming on the spider-thin limbs of the Yggdrasil world tree
of your branching veins. This was THAT POEM, the poem that takes people off
sixth-floor concrete ledges, or else puts them there. I
was going to write THAT POEM, the last whistling words you would've heard
shrieking through your screaming ears
right before your blood paved the ground. I could taste it, I could taste it, I could taste
THAT POEM!
AND I WAS GOING TO WRITE IT!
But then I sat down to my computer & it seemed I didn't have the words.

THAT POEM (Writer's Block) by *winterkate best read aloud. ( Featured by BeccaJS )
:iconthe-poisioned-1:
WOW is all i can say honey, from the very first sentence of the stanza you wrote caught my attention and i wanted to keep reading i could feel the anger and the hatered behind it and i swear i could feel everything that the woman u were slamming felt even the cold metal of the gun damn that was amazingly refreshing ive never felt that in all my time being on DA it was an eye opening poem that in the end o could taste the cold harshness of ur words which was gorgeous absolutely gorgeous keep going and dont stop til there is nothing left

I too was taken captive by this poem and forced on an emotional roller coaster. I felt like i was in the room, watching and reading your thoughts. Beautiful use of imagery and caps. The title is what first lured me into the trap because most writer's block poems are comedic or sarcastic but i felt anger and passion when i read this poem. I felt the blind insanity that was leading the main character to this act of desparation. This kind of reminds me of Plath with a different take. I loved this and i hope to see more!

I found this by accident, surfing DA while trying to rid myself of my own writer's block. I read the first few words just as something to do. Then I was sucked in by the extraordinariness. A couple moments later, my brain exploded from the sheer force of the inspiration that hit me. I'm just taking a second or two to favourite this and comment before I reopen my Word document. Thank you for this masterpiece. :unla:

Ahh... THAT POEM... resonates like the forgotten love song inside my skull. I was going to write you, I promise, but the evil of dA (not really) tore my eyes away from Word document and to art.
Goodbye, THAT POEM. May we meet again, and then, then I will write you. Like I said the other times.

Ah, I've felt this sensation before. When you get that absolutely perfect idea in your head, and then your fingers fail to write/ type it out! You've captured the idea, certainly. Capitalizing THAT POEM really conveys the frustration felt, too. Definitely favoriting this!

Thank you so much! I'm really glad that you liked it :) and that you could relate? No. Perhaps I'm not glad that you could relate. Cuz I wish this didn't happen to people. But it does, so thank you for relating :)

Lose the word "computer" in the last line. It's too *there* and doesn't fit the mood of the poem. You're not talking about something CONCRETE, you're talking about THAT POEM. Other than that it's completely and totally fucking perfect. It's almost as good as heroin (and I got the burnt spoon over on the counter from last night, so I'd know) and better than sex.
