Thesis - Lanner Falcon by windfalcon Thesis - Lanner Falcon by windfalcon
This is the ninth in a series of ten paintings for my thesis, An Illustrative Exploration of Birds of Prey in History and Culture. This is the lanner falcon as representative of the Egyptian god, Horus.

The strong malar stripe and large eye of the lanner falcon can be seen in the Eye of Horus. Horus was a major god in Egyptian beliefs, seen both as a man with a falcon's head, and also as the falcon itself. In some tales, Horus' eyes are the sun and moon.

Watercolor on cold-press watercolor paper, 9X10 inches

Another of one of my favorite Egyptian gods. I love Horus, and it is a wonderful way of showing the ancient Egyptians' beliefs. The close-up is just fab!

Lanners are awesome.

I think so far, of all your thesis paintings, this one is by far the best. Very well done.

Would you consider offering these as prints?

I am offering these as limited edition giclee prints. :) Of course, since they're signed and giclee, I can't offer them through DA, but I will be selling them on my website.

I've never heard of giclee...

But very cool.

Giclee is simply a method of printing with archival inks on paper - in this case, watercolor-textured paper. :)

Thanks! :) Peregrines and lanners look similar, though lanner falcons have a lovely reddish crown.

You're welcome. It's the facial markings that really seem similar. Speaking of your thesis, I wouldn't mind taking a look at the full work. Do you think you'll ever publish it?

Sure! Technically it's being 'published' at my school (a copy in the library) though the written portion is only about 30 pages. I'll just have to figure out how to put it up. :D

Well, I'm sure that you'll find a way. You've mentioned a couple myths that I'd never heard of till now, and I wouldn't mind hearing about more. I love mythology in general, and especially since it has to do with such amazing birds of prey.:)

I caught the symbolism of the sun right after you mentioned Horus. Great work. I think this is one of my favorites from your thesis.
