The first in my Radioactive Phoenixes series: Radium.

This phoenix stands above a pile of cracked teeth and broken jaws - a common ailment of glowing-watch-dial painters who shaped Radium-laced brushes in their mouths. These women were known as the "Radium Girls", who tragically not only died horrifically, but had their illnesses shrugged off as 'syphilis' by the company that hired them to avoid legal responsibility.

Acrylic on board, 14X18 inches

Holy, epically phenomenal! This Wondrous Radioactive Phoenix Radium is stunning, and Cracked Bones and Jaws look incredible. The designs, radium-laced brushes, clock, magic, wings, tail, head crest, feathers, back head feathers, eyes, talons, feet, claws, teeth necklace, neon green numbers, cracked bones, brick pillar, bricks, ominous feeling, sky, clouds, storm, mist, mountains, ledges, cliffs, crevices, wind, ground, pathway, terrain, shadows, effects, flow, movement, perspective, realisticness, atmosphere, textures, hues, concept, composition, uniqueness, style, lighting, colors, and other details are also sensational. Amazingly Radical work! :iconfantasticplz:

Very creative, to do phoenixes with this theme. I love this interpretation of Radium, especially how foreboding it seems. The bones at its feet are a wonderful creepy touch!

I kid you not I grew up not far Orange, NJ where this went down. It's just one of many bits of Jersey lore that's stayed with me even after I moved to NY.

It is horrifying, reprehensible, and duplicitous; what those who want to make money their god, will do to the innocent.  This is psychologically a very strong image.  The phoenix looming above the bones of the dead.  The phoenix, which will rise again, and destroy others?  Very creative work.  I will be watching for more!

This painting gives me nightmares.
But I still like this phoenix.
I look forward to see the next phoenixes in this series.

Magnificent! The low angle makes the phoenix loom all the more eerily. I'm happy to read this is the start of a series. Looking forward to seeing more :)

There was also time when the stuff was marketed as a medicine!

It was called Radithor and, if memory serves right, one poor bastard took so much of the stuff that his lower and upper jaw fell off!
