Blue Fronted Amazon - Leather Wings Necklace by windfalcon Blue Fronted Amazon - Leather Wings Necklace by windfalcon
When I was growing up, we had two blue-fronted amazons named Sam and Curly.  Even though what I really loved were raptors, I thought parrots were just so cool.  They're visibly intelligent, playful, and definitely have their own personalities.  I still have a box of their molted feathers, which always amazed me with their range of colors.

Hand-carved 7-oz leather with a 3-oz top layer, hand-painted with acrylics.

I offer custom leather wing necklaces here - www.etsy.com/listing/126556062…

Beautiful work! The detailing and color matching on the feathers is amazing
I grew up with a pair of blue fronted amazons in the house, I always admired their rainbow of bright plumage and their wild acrobatics on their hanging toys.
Thank you so much for sharing your creativity with :iconflock-together: !

I wish I could get one of these for my mother for Christmas, but I think I'm a little too late to get it now.

I bet it's such a pain to do one wing so gorgeous and perfect, and then try to get the other one to be the same...

It's not too hard - when I design wings, I transfer them onto a sheet of clear acetate, and when I transfer the design onto the leather, I just flip the acetate over so it's a perfect mirror image.  If the plumage is slightly different on each then that's fine, since no two wings are exactly the same anyway, even on the same bird :3

Your leatherwork is always so beautiful! Do you paint ventral and dorsal or just dorsal? Either way these are gorgeous and remind me of the yellow-nape amazons I used to work with in Florida :D

I can create either orientation. Usually I tool/paint dorsal since most birds' most vibrant plumage is on the top of the wings.

ah so its an either/or versus painted on both sides?

No, I only paint one side of these (since the back of the leather is rough and can't be tooled, plus it's not like a single feather that can flip around. I do paint both sides of the hanging tail feather).  But if someone requests a ventral view, I can tool and paint it for that specific view.
