Another practice painting with inks and watercolors. I'm really pleased with how this one came out! :)

Materials:
Micron 03, Acrylic Ink and Watercolor on Strathmore heavy-weight watercolor paper. ~6x9in.
Around 4-5 hours.

Critiques and comments are welcome! I am still new to this medium and looking to improve! :) (Smile)

Other than the middle finger not expressing it's top segment or any possibility of bending, or that your palm is drawn a bit too thin, it's freaking impressive for a human hand! The vision is very clear and sentimental. The background must have taken a messy effort that I used before. I like it, very nice. The color is also a pretty shade of Analogous hues and go very well with the darker color of the hand and the lighter of the fairy. The black string finishes off the balance and makes the connection, having its own symbolism in my opinion. Please keep up the good work!

Thanks so much for taking the time to write a critique! I really appreciate it!

Oh my gosh, I just noticed the middle finger (that you pointed out!) It definitely needs another joint, haha oops!!

Oh no problem my friend! And no worries, rookie mistake. Now you know to add it next go around!

The idea here is very clear: It's a fairy in a bottle! So I awarded five stars for vision, because this piece is very clear in its idea and execution.

I have seen this idea before, but in different expressions. This is also a different version of a fairy than I am used to seeing. You also don't usually see the bottle glowing, or see fairies as blue. By showing the hand here, we also get a sense of scale. So I awarded four stars for originality; it's not the most original idea, but is certainly an original expression. <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s…" width="15" height="15" alt=":)" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=":) (Smile)"/> Therefore originality was awarded 4 stars.

For technique I awarded 3 stars. This was made using ink and watercolor, although the textures made here looked a lot like colored pencil. So I was surprised that there was no report of using colored pencils here. That being said, the artist themselves said they were new to this medium, and watercolors are not easy to use at first, despite what elementary school teaches us. The texture is very sandy and porous, which is fine to see on the hand, that sort of texture belongs there. However, I feel the movement and texture in the background was just a bit too busy, because my eyes would sometimes wander off to look at the splotches rather than the fairy in the bottle or the hand. However, the line work is very smooth, and the blue light from the fairy is reflected onto the hand, which is excellent, because it shows us they are existing in the same world. The paint splotches were also a nice, fun touch.

Overall impact was awarded 3.5 stars, because this is a very nice and fun piece. The colors are soothing, it is fun to look at, and all the subjects seem as though they belong. However, the varying texture and strong movement of the background does kind of take away from it, and leads our eye off the page. Using a wash instead would tame that background.

I like how you used watercolours here, they look well pigmented, not too watery, but yet soft.
Unfortunately I really don't get along with watercolours (I have no patience really xD) but I like how you managed watercolours here. The lightning on the hand especially looks gorgeous :D

Thank you! I really appreciate it!
I usually don't get along with watercolors either! haha But I am trying to be patient and learn to use them!

Captivating!  I love the Japanese anime  BLEACH and your fantastic and magical drawing reminds me of one of the characters who carried something like this....and when needed, turns into a bow.  Well done!

How cool! That would be an interesting way to "sheath" your weapon! haha
The original idea behind this drawing was actually a sorcerer who captures souls in a bottle and later uses them as a source of her power. This was the hand study/detail sketch that went with that drawing, but I liked this better than the full drawing in the end. hehe
Thanks for the comment!

Thanks! :)
And thank you for taking the time to leave a critique. I really appreciate the feedback! It's funny that you mention the paint looking like colored pencils, because that's what I'm used to using. Must be that I try to use a similar technique with them.

You're very welcome. :D And that is pretty funny! Congrats, though, because I've never seen anyone make watercolor look like colored pencil! Your technique is effective.
