STEY: Locomotives and Legends - Cover and Foreword

Dear readers,Some of you may be familiar with the urban legend of the 'Strategic Steam Reserve', a fleet of steam engines secretly hidden away in England during the Cold War.I'm afraid to say, the SSR is only an urban legend.  But as with all legends, it grew from a seed of truth.  In this case, that seed was events which occurred on Sodor long ago, but were only discovered in 1996.As you can imagine, this discovery caused a bit of a stir and raised a few questions, for both the engines and the Fat Controller.  Fortunately, they were able to find answers.Regards,The Author.

"He was bragging about that d**n race with Bertie again, wasn't he?" "I'm afraid so." Seven years later: "Pug! So they did buy you after all." "Indeed. Heard you were worried." "Well, we know what 'withdrawn' really means. Your new livery suits you. You've been given an air pump, too?" "Yes. To be on the safe side, apparently." "I'm not surprised, after what happened." "What happened, Percy? I heard about a tank truck going into the factory." "Have you seen the old Mr Jolly factory?" "No, they'd finished moving to the new one by the time I arrived." "Ah, well the tracks at the old one ended at the wall." "I see where this is going." "Those 20-ton tank trucks can be tricky. I had a few full of milk, and it was raining. I shunted them like usual. Next thing I know, the tankers are
