A rush of air hit the Alpha and claws raked through his fur as he tried to dodge an attack from his foe, only narrowly avoiding the big wolf's blow. "Kane!" Alcatraz panted, landing on his paws and turning in place to face the big white wolf, "you took the lessons to heart, your agility is remarkable." Alcatraz remembered emphasizing that lesson to Kane when he was a child. Kane would always have strength, which was clear now, and paired with his impressive maneuverability that is sure to shock any opponent. It was another reminder of why he was a Beta even at such a young age. The big Warden smiled, panting from the effort of the spar, his tail wagging slowly from the excitement.
The fur barely brisked the body of the dark-brown male. Kane just missed tackling his foe, and landed on his paws as the other took a moment. Kane smiled at the praise that was given, and Kane took it to heart. He liked hearing that he had improved, especially when the praise came from his Uncle Alcatraz, Alpha of Aryn."I did have a good teacher when I was younger." Kane made a playful grin towards his uncle, and he took a moment to rest himself. He wanted to be the best for his family, and he was glad that his determination was paying off. Kane then walked over to his uncle, as his smile was clear, and his tail wagged in delight."I hope I'm making you proud."
Alcatraz gave him a gruff smile, “I suppose you did, didn’t you?” he joked with a small laugh. Despite the joke, Alcatraz had to say he had gotten a lot more humility since he became Alpha. Which seemed counterintuitive to him at first. As he rose the ranks, he would have expected his ego to grow with his reputation. But it didn’t. In fact, it had shrunk. And the gratefulness of a youth which would have made him hold his head higher just a few years ago now gave him an entirely different, but much greater feeling. The feeling of fulfillment in his life. For what was more important than tending to the future? Young wolves, like Kane, were the future
He stepped forward to greet Kane as he approached him, his tail wagging in return, “As the youngest member of the Rah’at, you surely are. And even without, no wolf can deny your abilities.” he said. Kane had grown quickly, climbing the ranks and surpassing his peers until his hard work landed him in the highest rank of the pack. It was surely impressive for a wolf his age.
Hearing the words, the appreciation, that came from the Alpha's words. Kane knew that what he had done to become Beta was an extraordinary thing for his age, and he felt more proud about it. Part of himself however, began to sink. Thinking about part of his motivation to become what he was now. He wanted to do this for his family, but they were all gone now. His mom, dad, and all his siblings, gone. He was the only one left, and he began to choke a little at his next words."Those words....mean so much....coming from you." Small tears began to come out, as Kane tried to hold them back, knowing that he was probably making himself look like a fool in front of his Uncle.
Alcatraz furrowed his brow as the big white wolf began to tear up, his smile fading despite Kane’s kind words and confusion clouding his eyes. Was it something he had said? It wasn’t usual for a wolf to weep in an everyday situation such as this! Unless there was something about this moment that Alcatraz wasn’t seeing. “What’s wrong?” he asked.
His Uncle asked what was wrong, and Kane tried to have the courage to admit his thoughts. He had never really told anyone, and he felt at first that they really wouldn't care. Now though, it felt different, and he really wanted to let him know. Would he feel awkward? Not pleased? Kane tried to take a deep breath."After my parents....I-I never felt the same. I felt this hole that needed to be filled in my heart. You and Aunt Athena, I've always looked up to you two. I feel as if you're a father to me, and Aunt Athena as my mother. I love you two so much, but I didn't know if you'd think the same of me."
Kane's ears dropped, as did his head, as he sat down in a form of disappointment. He was waiting for the moment that his Uncle would say that what he said was ridiculous, or that it was foolish to think such things. He felt as if he was going to be scolded like a child who had disobeyed. He had no clue what would happen, but he prayed to the one that his Uncle wouldn't be ashamed of him.
Alcatraz listened with his dark ears perked forward. He understood as Kane began, it was hard to lose parents. Alcatraz had lost his father at a very young age. So losing both parents he knew had been a heart-wrenching experience for the young male. Just as it had been for him, both when he lost his father and when he lost Charaka who was one of his closest friends.
Alcatraz and Athena had been quick to step into Kane’s life, helping him as he continued to grow. It had seemed an instinctive reaction, natural, for the two wolves especially because of their own children of about the same age. But he had never really thought about what it meant for Kane, or even what it meant for him even, but Kane’s words made him realize that the sentiment was mutual.
Alcatraz was not often an emotional wolf, but thinking about his relationship with Kane, hearing Kane’s thoughts about it, and the white wolf’s posture now, almost as if he was afraid Alcatraz would not share any such love, it made the dark Alpha smile softly. He stepped forward to assure him, nuzzling Kane’s lowered cheek, “Don’t look so down, Kane,” he said, “It’s an honor. And you are like a son to me as well.”
Kane was just waiting for nothing. The emptiness of his uncle not responding to what he just said. He felt as if his uncle was just going to speak awkwardly about him, and what he felt. He was prepared for nothing. That's when he felt something he didn't expect. He felt his uncle nuzzling his lowered head. He heard the words that he spoke, and he was shocked. He actually felt the same about being a father to him. More tears rolled from his eyes, as he kept those words in his heart.
Kane then moved his head, and was quick to hug his uncle. He held that hug, for as long as he could. His crying was still evident, but he had tears of joy now. His tail wagged in delight, as he continued to hug his uncle."Thank you so much. It really means a lot to hear those words. I'll make you proud." A smile grew on his face, having feeling the happiest he had been all day.
Alcatraz couldn’t help but smile as the big white wolf hugged him. He was not much of a touchy feely kind of wolf but this time he didn’t mind, and waited patiently as Kane hugged him. “You will,” Alcatraz agreed. Once the hug ended Alcatraz took a step back, “Now come, let’s run the maneuver again. And next time, you’d best catch me!”
