His aunt was out. Ragnarok was bored. The young male was now becoming stronger and was venturing further from the winter den every day, bringing back different kills each day. Yet he felt restless and antsy. What was he kissing?
Sighing deeply the wolf rolled in the snow, before a deep voice caught his attention. Rolling right side up his orange eyes caught sight of the familiar body of the Lord of Aryn.
The big brown male always stirred a feeling of respect within Ragnarok and he admired the male greatly. Throwing caution to the wind Ragnarok stood up as the other wolves around Alcatraz dispersed and he hurried forward. "Jefe! Jefe Alcatraz can I have a moment of your time sir please?"
Ragnarok called out, coming to a stop near the big brown male. He gulped suddenly nervous. God he was an idiot.
Alcatraz had just finished giving orders to a border patrol, informing them of the possible location of a coyote den that should be relocated for the protection of the new pups. As the group left Alcatraz turned to see a young male coming toward him. It took him to a moment to place the name to Amara’s nephew, who had recently come to Aryn and was now staying as an honored guest. Ragnarok,
the Lord recalled. He turned so he was facing the young brown male. “You may,”
he said gruffly, examining the young wolf with his pale yellow eyes. He could see that he was a bit nervous. Alcatraz like that, especially of new members. They ought not feel too comfortable too quickly, not in times like these. Though the nephew of Amara Alcatraz expected was one to be trusted. “What can I do for you, Ragnarok?”
Those pale yellow eyes reminded him of his uncle. Donovan had been the one to rip the tail off of him. Ragnarok felt his legs shake but he reminded himself, Donovan wasn't here and he was safe. Facing the demon head on he looked Alcatraz in his face, ears going back and body lowering in deference. "Jefe, i know i am a stranger but... well i want to learn to serve. In my old ...home.. i wasn't taught how to defend myself. Jefe, if you would grant this boon I would ask that you get me started on this path so i may better serve Aryn."
Ragnarok managed to get out, without a single stutter and his heart beating wildly.
By now Alcatraz figured that Jefe
meant leader, perhaps it is what he used to refer to his old Alpha as. Alcatraz knew little about the pasts of most of his packmates, no one knew his, after all, and he assumed most others who were once loners were disinclined to speak of it. He frowned a bit when he saw that Ragnarok was shaking. He was going to ask about the young male’s well being but Ragnarok then began to speak.
Despite the fact he was nervous, his voice rang clear and determined. Alcatraz approved. “A wise endeavor. Yes, I will teach you,”
he agreed. Every wolf needed to know how to defend themselves, after all. “Come,”
he flicked his tail to beckon Ragnarok after him as he lead the way from the main den site. They would find a nearby clearing to cover the basics. “Before we begin,”
Alcatraz said, looking over his shoulder as the young wolf caught up to him, “do you want to learn simple self-defense, or are you interested in the Warden task?”
That would be important. Alcatraz and other Wardens helped every wolf they could improve their combat skills. But it would be a different situation if Ragnarok wanted to do more with it.
The young wolf followed the alpha male, eyes darting around. Mapping every edit route if need be and keeping his ears rotated so he can hear the pack. If need be he could scream for help. Shaking his head he set a determined look on his face. He will overcome.
The alpha's question did catch him off guard though. Could he be a warden? Thinking for a moment, Ragnarok shook his head. After all the violence, he could never systematically do something like that. Maybe when he mentally recovered. "Forgive me Jefe Alcatraz, but I do not think I am cut out do the warden task. Not with my past."
Ragnarok said truthfully and honestly. "I do want to protect when called upon and to be able to protect myself though. If what I have said has offended you I am deeply sorry."
His ears went back as the worry crept into his mind. He really hope he won't get a beating now for offending.
Alcatraz nodded curtly at Ragnarok’s answer. So it was self-defense he was looking for. That would include the combat basics, how to disengage, perhaps some clever moves to catch his potential opponent off guard- Alcatraz’s thoughts were broken by Ragnarok’s next words, and he looked back at the younger male in mild surprise. Ragnarok’s words were anxious and his ears were lowered. Surely I’m not that frightening!
Alcatraz thought, thinking back on his words, if he might have been too harsh. But Ragnarok had spoken about his past. Perhaps that had something to do with this. He would have to discuss it with Athena later, get more insight on where the male was from.
For now, he answered Ragnarok, “Nonsense, you’ll have to try harder than that to offend me.”
Alcatraz liked to think he had thick skin. In reality, he could be rather sensitive to insults… but not about something personal like this. He went on, “The wisest wolf is the wolf who knows himself. And it’s noble of you to stray from your comfort zone for the sake of keeping our family safe.”
The younger male perked up. The lord of Aryn sounded like La Reyna. His great grandma had been a wonderful wolf and had taught him many things before she had passed. He let his muscle's relax. "Thank you! I won't let you down Jefe Alcatraz. I mean uhm...lord? Lord Alcatraz. I must remember I'm not in Sombra anymore."
here the younger wolf formally bowed. "I am but your humble student. Mold me as you will."
Alcatraz noted when Ragnarok confirmed that Jefe had been the Alpha title back in Sombra. “Yes, Lord is the proper term here,”
Alcatraz confirmed, “though as long as all orders are followed, it makes no matter to me,”
Alcatraz cared little for titles beyond the discipline that came with them, though he supposed he did enjoy how Lord Alcatraz
sounded. “Very well,”
he answered as they entered the clearing. He trotted to the center and then circled around to face Ragnarok, regarding him with cool yellow eyes. “Let’s see what you know.”
Without further ado the dark Lord burst forward, right at the younger wolf in a full-out tackle.
Ok that was not expected whatsoever. The lord had talked to him, Ragnarok rising from his bow and Rag had relaxed his muscles. He was completely unprepared for the attack. Ears flying back and eyes wide, Ragnarok braced himself for impact.
And impact hit him hard. With a yelp, Ragnarok rolled and he managed to gain his feet again, crouching to examine the lord of Aryn before he decided to take a dive at the Lord's paws. Though he was emaciated, maybe his bulk would be enough to knock the larger male off balance and Ragnarok could bring him down and pin him.
Here's to wishful thinking.
Alcatraz saw the shock flash across Ragnarok’s eyes as he flew toward him. Alcatraz’s attack had hit square on, and it send the other wolf rolling into the snow. Alcatraz paused to let him recover. The Alpha would have attacked again, but it seemed that the other was preparing to make his own strike. So Alcatraz decided to let him. After a pause, Ragnarok dove forward, aiming for Alcatraz’s paws. The dark wolf sprang to the side, avoiding the attack and trotting around him, “Good instincts. If you injure a leg then your enemy is in trouble.”
Alcatraz said. “Your gaze gave you away.”
he stopped before Ragnarok to hear his reaction. He almost mentioned that Ragnarok’s slower speed gave Alcatraz time to prepare, but the Alpha decided to leave that out. He could not blame him for taking time to examine an enemy before striking. There was value in that, and perhaps it was preferable. After all, a wolf he leaped into a fight too recklessly was quite likely to misstep, and was easily taken advantage of by a more skilled opponent. Surprise was important, but only if you knew how to use it. For now, a thoughtful and defensive method would probably be safest for his new packmate.
Yup. He missed. Face planting in the snow he bounced up and turned to face Alcatraz again. Shaking his fur out he gave the alpha a wry smile. ” I do believe I was slow too. I swear Jefe I am not always like this. Once I am fully recovered I will be a faster and better pupil.”
with that said though, Ragnarok jumped forward and hit the Alpha, a smirk on his face. It was no more then a paw tap but he tried to move back faster. His body wasn’t built that way but it could be seen if he gained muscle the hit and run style of fighting would be beneficial to the younger wolf.
Alcatraz nodded at Ragnarok’s self-critique, “Perhaps, but better take a bit more time to plan your move carefully than making a mistake in your haste. A lunge at your opponent is dangerous and cannot be taken back.”
Suddenly the younger male sprang forward, using a paw to tap Alcatraz on the face. The Alpha recoiled, surprised at the young wolf’s speed. Ragnarok withdrew rapidly out of range. Alcatraz gave a bit of a smile, approving, “You are more agile than you look!”
he exclaimed, “That’s something to take advantage of.”
Listening to the older wolf, Ragnarok smiled. His first genuine smile. Maybe he will be able to make it in this pack after all. He bowed to Alcatraz, tail wagging.”what else can I learn today Jefe? I wanna be like you.”
Alcatraz let out a chuff at Ragnarok’s words. As gruff as he could be, the admiration of the young wolf was not lost on the Alpha, and he dipped his head in return. “You honor me, but there are enough ‘me’s in Aryn. It is the ’you’s that we could make more use of.”
Alcatraz had his own style suited to his own strengths, and Ragnarok would develop his own as well. It was through those various styles that Aryn could best defend itself and grow strong. “Today we will learn what else you can do, so let’s get started.”
