Lord Alcatraz stood tall on a large rock in Aryn’s main den site, looking out as the last echoes of his beckoning howl faded into the black forest. His pack gathered before him and the council who were seated at the rock’s base.
Many were anxious. Word spread quickly. They all knew something had happened. Something terrible. Alcatraz did not waste time, and began.
“I have grave news. A patrol of our wolves has been taken by Vektren. And I mean that exactly as it sounds. There is nothing left of them but blood and herb residue at the site of a presumed confrontation. Raghaalr, Tzuri, and Nero were on the patrol. Dyana was also in the area, and has not been found. We do not know if she was taken with the rest or if her disappearance is a separate situation.” One of his closest and most trusted friends, three of his children… the Lord of Aryn was still grappling with the reality of all this.
“Taken, however, does not mean dead. No bodies were found at the site. We do not yet know why this has happened, or the intentions of our foe, but we have no reason to believe they are dead. We will do everything we can to recover our brothers and sisters. Pray for their safe return to us.”
“In the meantime,” His burning yellow eyes swept across the pack, fangs glinting sternly as he spoke, “the very top priority of each and every one of you is to be safe! We cannot lose anyone else. For the sake of your fellow brothers and sisters, do not travel far from the main pack alone. Do not walk our closest border to Vektren without at least three others by your side! And most importantly. Do not take matters into your own paws. The Three Bodies and myself will welcome any of your input and ideas as we develop strategies, but no one shall take action alone. We are a pack, our greatest strength is with each other. Alone or divided we will be picked off. But together we are a force mightier than any other, and together we shall see our way through this.”
He paused, frowning deeply for a moment as he held the gaze of his packmates. “You may be wondering why it is I who addresses you this night. Our Lady Athena has been working harder than anyone during these dark and trying times. News of this recent blow to our pack has left her exhausted, and ill with grief. She is taking a break from her duties. I will be filling in until she recovers, and the Three Bodies will collectively take up the slack of the missing council members.“ There had been much debate about how to handle the state of their Alpha female. Several had insisted on telling the pack that Athena may not recover. They don’t know you… Alcatraz growled to himself. Her condition was not like anything he had ever seen, it was terrifying to them all. But it had been less than a day. He saw no reason in assuming the worst. They just don’t know you like I do. Athena was the strongest wolf in the world, she could handle anything. She would handle anything. Including this. “She will not be taking visitors at this time, as it is important that she gets her rest. Updates on her recovery will be provided to you.”
He paused again, letting the news sink in. Even for himself. He still felt somewhat in shock. Especially saying it all out loud. But he knew that he had to be strong for the pack, so he put on a face of stone. This was not the time to falter. He had to be strong. Twice as strong. And it still would never replace you.
“Any concerns can be brought to me or one of our council. Do not be afraid to approach. There is no concern too small, no idea too far-fetched. We all need to work together now more than ever before.” He paused for the last time and then concluded. “Look out for each other."
"You are dismissed.”
