Historically Accurate Animated Characters by Wickfield Historically Accurate Animated Characters by Wickfield

As a lifelong history fan, I’ve always been interested by historically accurate Disney series.  In 2015, I decided it was time to start my own! Now that the series is finished, I compiled this timeline of all the realistic fashions, dating from ancient times to the 20th century.

Obviously this is not a comprehensive list of every famous character – notably I left out most of the Disney Princesses.  This is because I wanted to focus on more underrepresented characters, especially POC and those of non-European cultures.  I also added some of the newer characters and a few of my personal favorites for a grand total of 30 costumes!

All the characters’ outfits were carefully researched, based on the designs in their respective films (not the original fairytales).  I chose the time periods and locations using specific information from the movie or the creators where possible, otherwise I chose based on clues or the overall look of the film.  For complete information on each character’s design, including links to my reference images and sources, you can check out my DA gallery here: wickfield.deviantart.com/galle…

Thank you for looking, I hope you enjoy the series!

In my opinion: I think Beauty and the Beast was set in Renaissance France, Tangled was set in Medieval Germany, Marina should be in Middle Ages, because Sinbad is from the Arabian Nights like Aladdin; as should Mulan and Li Shang, because the movie was set in Han dynasty China

Belle looks so graceful, very natural. I only wish you'd included the cast from "The Princess and the Frog" for 20th century.

I would say "What about The Iron Giant?", but the film was practically made on that era (M41 tanks, f-86 jets, M1 Garands and carbines used, bazookas, no choppers, not black people with important roles...). Minus the Nautilus of course, which didn´t have nukes until the sixties.

They had a pretty good representation of late 50s clothing, actually...just simplified for easier animation. :)

For the same reason Milo Thatch and the Iron Giant are absent, she's already historically accurate.

Are you gonna draw Pocahontas, Tiana, Elena, & Moana too. + I might let you draw my OCs in your style. [since they're from 10,000 BC & the Biblical (myth form) & modern (human) times] :) :)

I think you need to bump up Marina. Clearly its 5-6th Century AD. Islamic, influence, Byzantine occupation of Italy at least partially, architecture seems to match.

I personally don't see much Islamic or Byzantine influence, and in the movie Syracuse is under Greek rule which means it needs to be an earlier setting. I have more info behind my research in Marina's individual drawing.

I can definately see where the artists drew inspiration. Alot of dones, alot of muslim style arches. I can definately say they looked at things like Alhambra in Spain to get the feeling. Lets not forget the ships, most of the ships appear to be Arabian types, similar to the trade and military vessels from the 8th century I've seen described. And of course there is the chronology of the story on which this is based. As far as I remember Singbad was a part of the 1001 Arabian nights, the oldest example of the book of tales is from the 9th century AD though I believe it was loosely based on a Persian manuscript of folktales that could be much older. The movie definately points to a period either shortly after Justinian the Great and the loss of Italy or somewhere after the Normans repelled the Moors from Sicily.

I never though, I'd have a discussion like this its so fascinating and awesome to see another person doing the same thing :D

Also can you do Maid Marian from Robin Hood? Or Robin Hood in general? Such an underrated movie :(

The artists drew inspiration from a lot of sources because they were creating a fantasy setting, but for this historic series it doesn't make sense to set it after Justinian the Great, because the movie specifically shows Syracuse under Greek rule which means it has to be 3rd century BC or older.  In fact at the time this movie came out people were very upset that they ignored most of the Sinbad legend's Arabic roots, because the film was released soon after 9/11 and they were hesitant to produce a film with Arabian ties.  Instead the creators said they based the story off Damon and Pythias and relocated it to the Ancient Greek setting so they could use Greek mythological characters - in the end they mainly just used the Sinbad name so it would be familiar to audiences which is part of the reason it was unpopular at the time.

Anyway I'm actually finished with this series apart from Moana, so I don't plan on adding any additional characters beyond that.

Well some Greek nationalists would claim that Byzantine and Greek are the same thing really. So I guess you've seen the behind the scenes material, since I have not I suppose I will take you're word for it.
Shame really, the original source material was far more interesting. Looks 6-7th Century to me still though.

Shame you didn't include Pocahontas, but then again if you had, you would have had to show her topless, as that's how women in her tribe dressed back then.

This is incredible. Not only are they in their appropriate years, but wearing accurate clothing. I love your take on Odette, Belle, and especially Flynn Rider and Elsa's costumes. Lovely work here.

These are really good! Honestly, it's very interesting seeing all these characters in historical outfits. I know in cartoons, things have to be interpreted/exaggerated so they're not 100% accurate in movies, but I think you pulled off these pretty well!

Yes, I agree, the animated designs are good for the animated movies, but it's just fun to draw them in historic clothes too!
