I noticed it's been a while since I posted any real journal updates, so thought I'd check in. It's been an interesting year to say now that we're halfway through it. Perhaps the biggest event as can be guessed from recent photos was the two week trip around southern Africa I went on with my folks earlier in mid-February and beginning of March. Four countries, different seasons (being Southern Hemisphere), two weeks. A mixture of culture and history along with taking in the natural landscape and wildlife. It was first time I'd traveled internationally (or flown at all) in almost 6 years- my last trip abroad had been in 2017 (Iceland) and the last time I'd been on a plane was to and from Chicago in 2019 before the pandemic. So, while it was an adjustment to sit in a tin can in the sky for almost 16 hours going and coming, it was beyond delightful to get out and go somewhere. Now I get to wait until my renewed passport comes back to decide where to go next. It's also the mark of a year

The next chapter is about 3/4 completed in rough form. So fingers crossed should be arriving sometime in the fall (I’ll post an actual calendar date when I get to the clean-up/preprocessing phase and have more certainty of readiness). For those readers who have gotten to the point to be waiting for the new installment (sorry for the wait in that case), or for those who are starting out/coming along, know that comments and thoughts/speculation about everything so far are welcome and encouraging.

It's been a while since my last notice. Again, the next chapter of Rise and Fall part two is still in progress, about 3/4 through (I had to pause and triple-check some research sources to make sure something was accurate/plausible and how- not going to say what it is, that would be a spoiler). I do hope to get it out by the end of the year, and ideally before the crunch of the holidays. So for those who are reading/waiting, I appreciate the patience. I've also got an idea for another freestyle essay currently percolating to be writing along the side and thought it would be interesting to prompt it with some questions opened for others to share some perspectives and ideas. So, here they are (a broad 7): - What does fanfiction serve in the relationship between audience and the creative work and the creator? - How does fanfiction fit into media and cultural history? - Is it really childish self-indulgence and not 'art'? Or is it a natural part of the artistic and cultural process that
