“Are there any questions?” The question hung in the air, and the professor really didn’t expect any response to it, for this lot never had questions at the end of her class. In any other academic atmosphere, she could believe that it was because the students either really didn’t care, or more likely, they knew that to ask a question would lead to even a longer class, and it was a warm summer day, and everyone wanted to spend the day outside. She would have liked to believe that it was because she was such a skilled teacher, and all the students would leave her class with a deeper understanding of the material, but she knew otherwise.
As she looked out into the eager young faces of her students, she smiled, but inwardly felt profound sorrow. None of these reasons were true.
