I really like Emilia Clarkes Daenerys, but I wish they'd made her eyes purple like in the books!

The show makers did try and give Danaerys and Viserys purple eyes, first with contacts and then digitally, but it never worked out. The filters that they used post-filming to get the scenes more realistic wreaked havoc with the eyes. This is the same reason Jon Snow and Arya Stark do not have grey eyes.

On to this picture though! I love the swirling red/fire and the dragons look so cool. I also really like you've incorporated stars into this piece, as the stars are such a huge part of the Dothraki beliefs, and now her own. :D

She does not have Dothraki beliefs, her whole season 6 arc was kind of about her realizing who she actually is and how many mistakes she made, well, we saw what she did to the Dothraki, they are nothing to her now.

Hey there!

My comment was made in February ofast year, so before the sixth season even started.

I was commenting on Danaerys' character in the books, which is slightly different to the show. In the books she still looks at the stars and thinks of the Dothraki belief that all important things in a persons life should be done under an open sky so the stars - the ancestoral spirits - can see. The braids in her hair are also a Dothraki custom to display strength, as is the colour blue that she often wears in the show, it is a colour of power among the Dothraki.

I agree the season six arc was about her realising who she is, but I disagree slightly about her not caring about the Dothraki. True, what she did to the leaders was uncaring and terrible, and it may seem she did it just to gain an army of Dothraki screamers, but I do believe she still genuinely cares for the opressed, and wants that to change. Or maybe that's just because I have the book-background to the show as well.

It's always nice to meet another fan though! Take care. :)

I think she see's the Dothraki as a means to an end, she is aware (acutely) of their culture being one of rape and wanton bloodshed, she doesn't like that one bit so i would guess she feels a sort of...responsibility.. to control it, she will most likely end up using them as front line shock troops, giving them the most risky and bloody jobs in whatever battles come next.

Oh there's no doubt she is thinking of them as ground troops. And I agree with you that she vehemently disagrees with the rape culture, slavery and violence and wants to eradicate it. I wonder how long the Dothraki will put up with such an opposing rule to their society.

Part of me wishes she had just stayed as a Khaleesi, giving up the dreams of Westeros and the Iron Throne. The books describe her time there with Drogo as the only time she felt truly free and happy. But then again, as a regular woman not of noble birth, I do not have to make the choice of happiness over ancestry.

Well, all that shit with Drogo was Stockholm syndrome, its confirmed... she may have "thought" she was happy, but based on her thoughts its quite clear, you can see when the stockholm syndrome kicked in. She appeared to get more satisfaction and happiness out of her conquest of slavers bay to be honest, like, pure enjoyment of being the Conquering Targaryen from Viserys's stories.

I would love her to have purple eyes too! But I guess wearing colored contacts for hours wouldn't be fun... This art is amazing!

This is lovely! Very unique- lately I have been seeing a lot of portraits of Emilia, but this one is one of the very best:)
I don't recall her eyes being purple in the books? Were they supposed to be in Game of Thrones, or was it after the first book?

Thank you :) They were always purple in the books, a Targaryen trait just like the silver hair. :)

Huh- I guess I just didn't remember that part. It's taken me over a year to read the damn thing! They are all super long XP That taken into account, it's incredibly disappointing that there are only 10 episodes per season.

I suppose they decided it would look too unrealistic/exaggarated - probably same reason Daario doesn't have blue hair :P Wonderful artwork, I really like how every brush stroke is visible, and the colour scheme with that intense red looks great. :)

Considering that it's a TV show and not one feature movie, they probably wanted to keep the actor annoyances to a minimum.
My guess is that maybe the actress can't wear lenses, and Daario wouldn't want to be forced to keep that hair color outside the set.

Just guessing though.

Maybe, but for example the reason they exchanged Vargo Hoat for Locke in the show was supposedly that the original character would look too exaggerated on screen. :) And Emilia Clarke isn't blonde outside the set either, so they could give Daario a wig too... but probably both reasons played a role in the decision, though. :)

No book spoilers please - but were her eyes always purple in the books or was it because of something?
