The Hobbit 75th Anniversary Edition

This was just a book cover assignment for school, but for me it meant a lot more.

This new curvalinear style you've seen me doing was originally inspired by several things, most importantly this painting by J.R.R. Tolkien. [link]

The Hobbit is probably my favorite story of all time. and has been extremely inspiring and influential to my work.

So here is what I think would be an awesome cover to celebrate the 75th anniversary of this epic tale.

Hopefully I don't have to explain it, but my intent was to make the title an ambigram and make the 4 corner words (spelling out the less well known full title of the book) rotate encouraging the viewer to actually rotate the book and literally go "there and back again"

Fave! WATCH!!!
This is awesome! And perfectly done!
These people are selling an iPad cover with your image on it, thought it best to check - did you give them permission?…
This is a gorgeous piece of work.
I have to ask -- did you authorize it to be used anywhere?  I was looking for a wallet style cover for my new HTC phone and I found one on Etsy with this print.  I would love to get it but because I know art sometimes gets used without permission, I did a search and immediately found your work.  If you've approved the use, I'd love to get the case, but I don't want to encourage someone profiting off of your work without your knowledge.

I would love to have this as a poster and gift it to my mom, are you selling prints by chance?

This is really good! I loved the idea of rotating the picture/book to go "there and back again", and I love how no matter which way you look at it the word "Hobbit" is never actually upside down!!! The art also has a medieval feel to it, similar to the cultures that inspired a lot of Tolkien's work. The colors are also very lovely! Well done mine friend, well done!! I am a thoroughly impressed Tolkien enthusiast! :D <3

own collection ?

Oh, I just saw the response to the post above. It is so cool that this made it to the cover of an actual book! That said, I'm sad that they had to edit out your lovely lettering - it left clumsy empty space, which is especially galling since your original design is so carefully put together. I hope they at least included the original as an illustration somewhere inside?

Wow! This is gorgeous, and the ambigram works very well: it is clearly readable (which is not easy to achieve in an ambigram!). The art style does an excellent job evoking Tolkien's own art. I love the choice of scenes - Bag End and Smaug's cavern, the two endpoints of the journey - and the striking color contrast between them, as well as how all the curving design elements lead the eye from one to the other, so that I want to keep (mentally) rotating the image to look at each of them in turn (reinforcing the effect of the "There And Back Again" inscription).
... And I just noticed the little "One Ring" in the center - fittingly serving as a visual anchor for the whole design. I like how it's shape is echoed by the hobbit-hole door and the arkenstone in the two scenes above and below, just as the gnarled tree is echoed by Smaug's wing - it gives a wonderful sense of balance without looking overly symmetrical.
The knotwork in the border is lovely as well - did you design it yourself, or draw on some source for reference/inspiration?
Overall, everything about this piece is incredibly well thought-out and well executed! I would love to see it on a physical copy of the book!
