HOUSE M.D. by werder HOUSE M.D. by werder
Gregory House, M.D., is a fictional character and protagonist of the Fox medical drama House. Portrayed by Hugh Laurie, the character is a maverick medical genius who heads a team of diagnosticians at the fictional Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital. House's character has been described as a "misanthrope" and a "curmudgeon", the latter of which was named one of the top television words of the year in honor of the character.

On the series, the character's unorthodox diagnostic approaches, radical therapeutic motives, and stalwart rationality has resulted in much conflict between himself and his colleagues. House is also often portrayed as lacking empathy and sympathy for his patients, a practice that allots him the time to solve pathological enigmas. The character is partly inspired by Sherlock Holmes.

House, also known as House, M.D., is an American medical drama television series created by David Shore and executive produced by Shore and film director Bryan Singer. The Emmy and Peabody Award-winning medical drama debuted on the FOX Network on November 16, 2004. The series is currently the most watched scripted program on FOX.

House stars British actor Hugh Laurie as the American title character Dr. Gregory House, a role for which he received the 2006 and 2007 Golden Globe Awards and 2007 Screen Actors Guild award for Best Actor in a Drama. In February 2007, House was renewed for a fourth season, which premiered on September 25, 2007 in the United States and Canada.

-----------

Parallels to Sherlock Holmes

House's character is partly inspired by Sherlock Holmes. The name "House" is a play on "Holmes" (with English pronunciation, a homophone for "homes"). Actor Robert Sean Leonard has said that House and his character were originally intended to play the roles of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson in the series although he believes that House's team has assumed the Watson role. House is addicted to Vicodin and experiments with other drugs, while Holmes has a cocaine habit and smokes a pipe regularly. Both men are musicians (House plays piano and guitar; Holmes plays violin) and both have a talent for accurately deciphering people's motives and histories from aspects of their personality and appearance. Holmes lives at 221B Baker Street, and House's street address is 221B.

In the pilot episode, the patient's name is Rebecca Adler - her last name is the same as that of one of the most famous characters in Doyle's story "A Scandal in Bohemia." She is described as the only woman who is able to outsmart Holmes, and the Adler character is able to unsettle House with insights on his personality. The name of House's nemesis in "No Reason," Jack Moriarty, coincides with Sherlock Holme's nemesis Professor Moriarty.

-----------

For anyone who thinks we are reading too much into a connection between Sherlock Holmes and Gregory House that was never intended, the creator of "House" (David Shore) gave an interview for an article in Zap2It by Kate O'Hare in January 2005 that said:
"...Anytime one says 'puzzle' and 'brilliant deduction' in the same sentence, one can't help but think of the great fictional detective Sherlock Holmes and his trusty sidekick, Dr. Watson. And indeed, Holmes -- and the real-life physician that inspired him, Dr. Joseph Bell -- were very much inspirations for 'House.'"

...Shore also hopes to draw more parallels to Holmes by drawing House's best, and likely only, friend, oncologist Dr. Wilson (Robert Sean Leonard), into the Watson role.

"We're looking for Wilson to step up in that regard, as House's everyman, leaning over his shoulder and going, 'How'd you do that?' And more important, 'Why'd you do that?'...."
"labyrinth" posted a link to this article in the Television Without Pity House Forum

Sherlock Holmes

Can deduce a great deal from just looking at a person.
Holmes' creator based the character on a doctor.
His name sounds like "Homes"
Sherlock Holmes fought deadly criminals
Used cocaine to escape boredom
Holmes calls even his best friend by his last name
Arrogant. Said humility would be a lie
Read the agony columns in the paper
Languid and lazy when not on a case.
His closest friend had problems with a wound in his leg (although initially, the wound was in his shoulder)
Music is very important to Holmes and he plays the violin.
Aloof, although less so with his only friend and roommate.

Gregory House, MD

Can deduce and diagnose a great deal just from looking at a person.
Greg House is a doctor
His name is another word for "Home"
Fights deadly germs, diseases and other medical problems.
Uses Vicodin for pain in his leg, and also for boredom and the pain of dealing with "stupid" people.
House calls all his associates by their last names
Greg House is extremely arrogant.
Watches soaps, plays video games, etc.
Lazy until he is forced to look into something that intrigues him.
Has a medical problem in his leg.
Music is very important to House and he plays the piano.
Keeps everyone except Wilson at a distance.
In #207 "Hunting" we discover House lives at 221B we see the number as House and Wilson leave in the morning (but we don't know the street).

"Casting"

Before Hugh Laurie was auditioning for the role of Gregory House, he was filming Flight of the Phoenix in Namibia. Laurie was to audition for the role of James Wilson and Gregory House. When Laurie read that Wilson was a character with a "handsome open face," he decided to audition for the role of House.

After watching casting tapes for the pilot episode, Bryan Singer grew frustrated and refused to cast a British actor with a flawed American accent for the role of Gregory House. However, when he saw Hugh Laurie's audition tape, Singer was fooled by Laurie's American accent. He mistook him as an American and praised Laurie as an example of a true American actor. Laurie initially believed that James Wilson would be the protagonist of the show after reading the brief description of the character and did not find out that House was the main character until he read the full script of the pilot episode. Prior to the airing of the series, the producers were also concerned that Laurie lacked sex appeal to the viewers. For his portrayal of Gregory House, Hugh Laurie has won Best Actor in a Television Drama Series from the Golden Globe in 2006 and 2007, and Best Actor from Drama Series from Screen Actors Guild Awards.

One similarity you forgot: For both House and Holmes, their best friend is a doctor. Just sayin'.

I don't usually like realism-to-cartoon pieces (I usually do the opposite), but these resemble the characters well and there are still plenty of details. Great job. :D

i don't like it either, only on certain occasions. trying to apply solid lines rather than just copying exactly and applying soft shades, putting in something of myself in the piece. glad you like it though, many thanks! :ahoy:

I think that's why I like this one. You have a pretty unique style compared to a lot of the realism-to-cartoon pieces I've seen. And it's not *too* cartoon-y. You're welcome, by the way!

Ah sorry didn't mean to insult you :P
I just saw it and thought of "Trauma Center" on the wii,or Phoenix Wright,it seems like a crisp thick black line art style,I like it though,it's like comic book / illustration as I said, you're definately moving away from manga though if that's your aim.
But it's also obviously apparent that you've come from a comic/manga background :)

But it's definatly got many elements of realistic sketches too,the typical diagonal collection of lines closely packed together to shade in shadowed areas instead of just a blob of black, touches like that are what you don't really get in manga :)

No worries, none taken.^^; I have to apologize for my message, my mind was off, I was rushing on replies and couldn't properly compose a reply.:nirvana:

I haven't heard of those games, i don't have a wii and I barely have time to play, too much work on my plate..X_X

I've been trying to mellow down the manga aspects of my drawings for quite some time, but it still has that element in there, I think it's innate, no matter how hard i try, the manga in me still surfaces. although I don't deny the fact I have manga/anime influences, mostly old school stuff, when the art was a bit diverse.

I must say thank you very much for the kind words and the comments, I totally appreciate it, my utmost gratitude. :handshake:

Damn, I love the show...

About your drawing itself, I think that, with your style, you captured Wilson, Foreman, Cameron, Taub and Cuddy quite perfectly. The rest, well... not how I see them :D

That said, I love the shading in House's
