Dramatic rise of motion from shadow-smothered depths, like the fiery rebirth of the phoenix, this work shapes its scene from the up and outward roaring spread of jagged feather stalks, transforming incoherence to coherence by framing a towering insanity slowly divulging its essence onto the mind of the viewer as though on the edge of consciousness. Inextricably suspended between a soft-hued serenity and the primal motive force of raw nature, this work packs within its modest bounds a vista of life like a snapshot frozen in time; a permanent impression of a transitory event.
Like a rising fog slowly uncovering the depths of a boundless lake, a visual collage opens from a solidity of dark purple into a light space where colours change tone, and therefore mood, becoming vibrating synchronisations of a dominant visual image. Highly spacious, this work allows doubt in the form of the individually vague and indistinct feather strokes to merge with a constancy of almost harmonious quality working together into an environmental wrap for the viewer.
Although there is a good deal of negative space ('emptiness') used in this work, and the limited colour palette lends it a minimalist quality, it is an excellent study in macro photographic technique directed to transforming a concrete, mundane object like a feather, into a surreal abstraction where all awareness of what is concrete is lost in a layered collage of colour and emotion, and by the organic and emotional interlude it provides by its mere viewing, shows insight to the ever-changing, ceaseless beauty of nature.
