It's alright, it's no deal breaker. The lore is kind of a hazy mess. :]
Just something to be aware of: if you just say someone jumped from one side to another without any further remark, it may garner odd looks as those sides, though similarly labeled, basically aren't on talking terms.

Another thing maybe to take note of is that at least according to some peoples' understanding of the lore, mage elves in Tevinter aren't actually so bad off; slavery in Tevinter affects the poor, human and elf alike. Elves seem to be enslaved more often, but they can be free, and free elves at least according to some ideas aren't much worse off than they are elsewhere in Thedas.
A mage elf then would by default be free once the mage training is complete; the law compels inclusion in a circle, there's no work getting someone into one, the work would be keeping someone out of the circle system. Unless of course said mage personally sold himself into slavery or indentured with a magister or made similar arrangements.
