Just a basic turn-around for now, but it also makes it easy for me to add other costumes for her later. As for her name, I decided that the setting should be not too far future, but for whatever reason people were taking on new surnames as they went to other planets for colonization. That sounds more like far future, but it will hopefully make sense when I draw some short comics and do a bit more explanation. At any rate, one of Dawn's ancestors was a navigator of some sort.

Art Notes:
I've created a sort of "cast" of characters with a unified design theme:

Now it's time to work on model sheets/turn arounds for each of them, along with some basic data and their names. Then I can move onto various scenes and short comics. I figured if I'm going to learn about creating comics and series and whatnot, I should really try to start from the start. Model sheets are really time-consuming for me, so this is a good opportunity to learn how to do them a bit faster.

Next up is Risa Waverider:

Very cool. I notice you left that lower center square blank. Is that because you covered the key angles for the character? Would you use it in another case?

Really excited to see develop all these gals. And I like her name a lot.

Thanks! That square is for when a character has asymmetric hair, so that I can easily see the design from two angles. With characters with mostly symmetric hair it's a bit easier.

I'd like to finish a model sheet a week, which will mean that this takes a while, but it will also give me time to get other projects worked on.

She's very cute! ^^  Maybe the arms are a bit too long?

Thanks! I had a look at the arms, and I'll have to think about it. When I was sketching they seemed a bit too short, but now they seem to reach where they should. At any rate, I will watch out for it.

My base of reference for arms length is the crotch line. The hands should be above it in my 3D models, or else there will be posing issues. Sometimes I let it go a little below the line, but not too much for the sake of posing. Nonetheless, drawings have more freedom to play with arm lengths in different poses, so I suppose it's not much of an issue. :)

Thanks for the comment- I just checked using Clip Studio Paint's grid, and the wrists are roughly where they should be above the crotch line. I think it might be the way I drew the hands and how they join up (creating an optical illusion), so I've made a few adjustments to the area.

Oh I see. In my grid, the hands should be above the line, not the wrists. But I understand this is pretty inconsequential in 2D, so it probably doesn't matter. Drawings have much more freedom when it comes to proportions, because you can make anything fit a pose when you draw it. When I've mentioned the arms, I was thinking in 3D, which kind of silly of me. Don't worry about it. :)

Thanks for the reply- I think I was a bit unclear in my message above. Also, I've tidied up the wrists a bit more and corrected a few line mistakes to make things clearer. When I draw a line out from the base of the crotch, it intersects roughly with somewhere in the middle of the palm of the hand. When you place the hand, about where would that line intersect?

That's it, the line should intersect with the center of the palms. In my designs, I know I went too far when the whole hand is below the line. However, the current body type I am working on has a very short torso, which makes it very tough to comply with this rule. Such things happen when we make very exaggerated proportions, like the one I am making now. In this case, the line is still crossing the palms, but not in the middle, and closer to the wrists. It's not a total disaster, but I can live with it, considering the unusual proportions with the short torso. if the arms were even a bit longer, she would look totally disproportioned, so I think I have reached the sweet spot for the design. In other words, there is always space for maneuver until we reach something that looks good. :)

You draw too many hot chicks. I'm running out of interesting things to say about how hot they are! :)

Thanks for the support! Once I've gotten a few more of the model sheets done I can move onto things like comics, and also trying to tell stories in simple pictures. One thing I've been thinking about is using a sort of pseudo PC-98 game style user interface- after all, those games were a key inspiration for this theme.
