Building Scale Models: Guide Page 2 by wbd Building Scale Models: Guide Page 2 by wbd
This will be a pretty simple guide, because I'm not really talking about how to make a contest winning model. Instead, I'm looking at showing you how to build a model that will work for your art. I still want to cover the basics of cleaning up sprue joints and flash and whatnot, as well as basic safety.

I need to practice drawing comic pages, and I've been trying to draw a page a week for that practice. I figured that this time I'd draw an instructional comic. In this case, I want to teach a bit about how to build scale models. I think models can be quite useful for an artist, but building them does require a few skills and tools. I hope that this little series can help explain what is needed and how you can build models. This isn't about building contest winners, but rather how to build models you'd find use for in your art.

OMG! How I spent my childhood and youth building ALL the old Aurora Prehistoric Scenes and Monsters, along with hundreds of Tanks,Armored Vehicles,Helicopters,Fighter and Bomber planes, and almost every Starship from Star Wars,Star Trek and Battlestar Galatica.

Sad now, unless you go online to buy from online model kit companies or the very FEW remaining model kit hobby shops, you now CAN'T find plastic kits anymore.

Last time I done a kit was in 2008 after buying a vinal Godzilla & Rodan kit during G-FEST.

I know the scale model market isn't as big as it used to be, but I'm hopeful that we'll see something of a comeback thanks to the internet- a bit like many other hobbies. If nothing else, hopefully my little comic can show other artists how simple and yet fun model building can be- or at least show them how.

I think the current model kit building craze is the GUNDAM Mechas and Japanese Anime series with Mechas. During my visits to the Chicago G-FEST/Godzilla Conventions,I seen lots of Japanese Bandai model kits of Gundams and Robotech mechas kits in the Dealers' Room.

Sadly I'm way too busy working and my eyesight isn't as perfect as it used to be. If this was different,I'd still be buying and building kits.

And damm! I had a armada of Star Wars & Star Trek ships. Got sold off at my Garage Sale.  Need to clear out space. SHUCKS!

Yeah, I want to help people learn how to build models, but I don't want them to get hurt trying.

Ugh, I know that "don't use your knife to separate parts" rule from personal experience. Thankfully, no one was hurt...

The problem is that it seems so convenient! I'm glad I found out about things like parts separators and case knives (for watch cases), as they save a lot of trouble.

Thanks- I wanted to start with safety first, because I want to make sure anyone who is learning hears about how to carefully build models. That should help them enjoy it, I figure.
