90s Style by wbd 90s Style by wbd
I've been trying to make pics look like screencaps for a while now, and I wanted to see if I could get the 90s look down in a fake screencap. I can see room for improvement, but it was fun to draw.

The character is original, if you were wondering.

YES YES YES!
Finally someone who understands the basic concept of 90's anime styles! ^_^
Angular eyes, Razor hair that shines like metal, mouth in high position, hard shading. You did everything how it should be! ^_^

Ahh... this is the kind of anime style i miss ^_^

Thanks for the kind words, but I can't claim any special knowledge. I just looked at a lot of stuff from that era, in that sharper style, and went with that. I'd have to learn a lot more to put a character like that into motion, or even just alternate poses.

I immediately thought I was looking at something from 90s anime, trying to place the character. You did a great job.

Thanks! I think trying out these concepts can be useful practice, as it shows me good room for corrections and improvement.

You certainly pulled off the look! At first glance, I thought this was a screenshot from Slayers or Saber Marionette! The increased graininess could also give it the look of a classic PC Engine cutscene.

Thanks! I think that I still have a lot to learn about making a screenshot look authentic, but I'm glad you like the progress so far. I think I need to give some real screenshots a closer look, along with scans from magazines to get a better feel for the era and how things look when digitized.

Looks late 90's (like Slayers/Lost Universe style).rather than early if that was what you were going for. I like the fake grain.

Yeah, this pic is much closer to the late 90s style in many ways. I've been using makegirls.moe to generate late 90s/early 2000s designs to help understand the look. I like the early 90s look more, but it has so much in common with the 80s that it would be hard to tell them apart in  my style.

Well kinda... it's more specifically Masami Ōbari en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masami_%…

I can see where you're coming from, but Obari's work has a lot more energy and dynamism and, well, "style". I think my pic is a bit too generic to be compared- a bit more like a watered down design that would work when a team of animators needs to quickly finish up a series.

You shouldn't say that, your art is great, I mean, his art is like mine, in that, it's very "me" but just because your lines are perfect in WBD art doesn't mean it's "watered down" I like it

Looks pretty convincing to me.  I'd love to know how you achieved that effect.

I think I overdid the grain effect, but the most important part was something I read elsewhere- to adjust the contrast and saturation until it got closer to that era's look. One trick would be to load up a good screencap in one window, and do the edits to the other picture beside it- try to match the "feel" of the shot. The only other tricks I can think of are to try to add some Gaussian blur, diffusion and maybe a bit of de-interlacing (on a duplicate level with reduced opacity), but not to overdo it.
