Hi - we wonder if our dA friends could share their favorite UW classific fiction (movies, TV shows, novels...) When we have enough nominations, we could take a poll to decide on the all-time winner of the U.W. Open Cup!

Our fav through the years have been pretty much Fortress (1985) but happy to hear other ideas :-)

Actually, since I haven't seen any of them (or heard of most of them), I'm going to go out on a limb and say ONLY the first 13 or so minutes of Wadatsumi 's TENTACULAR, not due to plot, character or adult content (I don't even like the ending!), but instead since it's a freediver of the kind you guys draw, but animated, so I can get an idea of what your characters actually look like when swimming.

I never saw or remember any of the choices you choose, so I'll name my own favorites. And even though I have lots to choose from, I've decided to pick the ones I like, in no particular order:

1. FernGully: The Last Rainforest: It is pretty brief and it leads into the song, "A Dream Worth Keeping". But seeing Crysta and Zak swimming through the water is beautiful to look at.
2. Atlantis: The Lost Empire: Kida looks even more hot underwater. And her and Milo swimming through the ruins is very well animated too.
3. Lilo and Stitch: The first with Lilo swimming in the ocean with the fish is good. But the scene in which Lilo and Stitch get pulled underwater by Jumba is almost scary, yet intriguing.
4. Any Pokemon Underwater scene, mostly with Misty or May. Though I haven't seen a lot of the episodes or movies, Some of the earlier UW scenes are nicely done, even with Misty as a mermaid. Yet, May in her swimsuit and being underwater from Pokemon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea is worth watching, despite not seeing the entire film.
5. Ranma 1/2 Manga: Some of the underwater images, mostly from the early 5 volumes, are really neat, and I do like to read them instead of look through them.

I recall watching most of the original season when it was new (and I was 10 or something, so I was actually in it's age group then, haven't seen anything in a decade or so), but I honestly don't remember any Misty underwater screens, let alone one as a mermaid. Can you give me any farther clues as to what I'm looking for?

There were two episodes I know of the have Misty as a mermaid. One was called "The Misty Mermaid" where she plays as a mermaid for a underwater ballet in the Cerulean Gym. And the other is from Pokemon Chronicles, I forgot the episode title, and she dress as a mermaid, the same outfit from the other episode, to calm a Gyarados down, despite having a fear of them.

Ah, so you read that one.  :D  It's funny; the first thing you learn in scuba diving is to never hold your breath.

And she does look like Aya a bit.  The whole Okinawan islander vibe.  There's an idea for something down the line - Aya all grown up.  :)  Or at least a little older lol.

Take this - free diver, accurate story. There is a middle aged guy that keeps blacking out because of reckless dive, he is hilarious though.
I love the protagonist, he has a lot in common with mine (except the fact that my character is a professional wrestler, not a free diver)

It's hard to say which works is my favorite. Now I just introduce some little-known works with uw, they all in japanese and not have english version.

Manga:Shinkai Shuushuunin (深海蒐集人 means "Collector of the deep sea") by  Kamata Kimiko (かまたきみこ).
This is a total fantasy works, not have any scientific basis, but I like the style of the story and the background setting: the flooded future world. The main heroine can hold her breath very long time(nearly one hour) and dive into hundred meters deep by gene mutation. She as a diver work for salvage the cultural assets of the old era.

For
fiction I introduce a short detective story by Jukou Nishimura(西村寿行),  the original japanese name is "濁流は逝く者の如し". I read the story on a foreign literary Magazine few years ago. The translation of the title is "Mermaid", I spend some time to found the original japanese name.
The
background of the story is Tama River, a lonely dumb girl live with her grandpa. She like swin and dive in river, she can hold her breath 4-5 minutes, her only friend is a huge Crap(length nearly 2m)live in the depth of Tama River, they often play together underwater. I like the back story, the sitting are
fantastic, I hope someone will create some new uw advance story use some similar setting.

For anime...eh... sorry, it's hard to say right now, but I think if the anime about the girl freediver by Gainax still on work and will come out someday, it wll be the greatest anime for uw fans. This is the last news about the anime i found
www.anigamers.com/posts/uru-in…
Gainax have some trouble recently, hope they will ok in futre and the project never be canceled.

Sorry for my bad English.

Thank you for sharing, just checked Amazon.jp and got a Kindle Version of Collector of the Deep Sea. It was good, the protagonist (Mimi) was sort of a lighthearted Lara Croft. Was not fully explained how much of her super ability was due to her genes and how much was due to training. If the latter carried more weight it would have been awesome - as there is a depiction of her rival (another beauty) who does some rigorous training to out-dive Mimi. My favorite line - Mimi to her rival when the duo is fleeing from villains: "How much more can you hold? (hand sign) Five minutes? Good!" :-)

With 濁流は逝く者の如し...sounds similar to 君よ憤怒の河を渡れ so maybe a series? I have associated 西村 with pretty much liquor, women, and violence (and dogs....lol) only so this was off my radar as well. There seems to be no Kindle copy for this, I guess the name of the last of the "hard-boiled" novelists is fading quickly after his death (due to liver problems...teaches you a lesson about drinking).

Yeah the Gainax freedive anime seems to have stalled - unfortunately. I imagine it is due to the challenges of building a dialogue when the characters are not able to speak with one another (because they are underwater). With lack of dialogue your freedive anime may end up as something spiritual/sensual, like B.B.Fish (not saying it is good or bad).

And btw lisenke1 san are you Japanese?

Sorry, I am not Japanese, I just konw a little Japanese + used online translate tool + conjecture.
I also buy the ebook version of
Collector of the Deep Sea but most dialogues I just can guess.

About
濁流は逝く者の如し,yes there is no the ebook ebook version, it's just a short story in 徳田左近シリーズ you can use library or read the other's comments first like
old.taipeimonochrome.com/?p=13… and juko.at.webry.info/200705/arti…

Though I can't read japanese all by my own, but I still bought another
japanese novel(also ebook): Hitotsu Umi no Parasuatena(ひとつ海のパラスアテナPallas Athena of the sea) vol 3 because the cover art and the introduce, but it's no illustration about freediving except the cover make me a little disponited.

I also have a news: Endou Okito(袁藤沖人) start a new manga about high school girl divers called Otohime Diver(乙姫ダイバー) on adult manga magazine Comic ExE vol 5(1.25.2017). he said it's a manga for the public(一般向け漫画 how to translate in english??),but why it on the adult manga magazine?

draft of your story "Kagerou(蜉蝣)". I kown "(⌒▽⌒)ノ"is Wadatsumi san's old username, the Kunoichi sisrers to assassinate Oda Nobunaga must be falled at last just like "Kagerou".I really want know your first setting for the story.

Yup TR is a classic...wish Angelina Jolie had a tenth of the diving skills of the game character! :-)
And I have already mentioned the Poseiden Adventure and it was pretty brutal - when the ladies were sort of waiting in line ina flooded compartment when a guy was trying to pry a hatch open. And the fmr Mayor of New York trying to put the turbines to reverse - that was one UW scene that was so rigorous that it kinda threw me off. :-)

Anyone has seen Fortress? I like it that the underwater cave is being used like a metaphor between your daily life and the world of survival, where you must kill off the bandits that are after you or be killed. And fairly amazing that they made kids (including little girls...) swim distances UW (and push one to near-drowning). And the funny thing is, there is one bully-type kid (kind of on the chubby side), who was supposed to be going through the cave but his actual UW scene is awkwardly missing. This makes me think this child actor was not able to pull of the act during the filming and there were no stunt doubles due to the low TV budget - which draws my very high respect for those girls who were much younger than this bully kid that did go through the cave and acted out the pain and agony of locked suffocation very real.

Well, this was in the '80s and in Australia so guess we can't expect HBO to create something like this. (although the remake of Poseidon Adventure had a similar setup, anyone remeber?)

My favorites:
Animated: My most favorite is probably from Darker Than Black Season 2. The scene was short, but it has a lot stuff happening. Suou is such a cutie, and she has a lot of adorable expression in that scene! The deep pool and the atmosphere of the scene helps a lot. But then she lost her cool and the moment she exhaled her air and went up... I fell in love with the scene XD. It's not just a great UW scene, it's a great scene overall that is important to the conflict the characters are facing in the story.

Manga: Dragon Ball, the UW scene with Bulma and Krillin was probably one of my first UW scenes and my all time favorite. It was such a surprise after they found a well in an underwater ruins, they strip down to their underwear and dived in! I don't think that's a right thing to do in that situation lol. I mean how would you know there will be any place to breathe?! But that's what makes the scene so special to me XD. This was also animated but the manga will always be my most favorite because nostalgia goggles lol.

Movies: Turistas, the first UW scene is just amazing. The dark cave, the fear showed by the people who was there (except the local who kept pushing the others to keep diving), the moment they surfaced and managed to pass through the long, long cave with no place to take a breath at all... all that combined to make a perfect harmony of a scene. I heard the actors actually did all the swimming themselves! Or at least most of it. One of the actress mentioned that they became a much much better swimmer than before. One funny thing that in the last UW scene there is a part where one of the actress bumped her head on the ceiling and panicked, it wasn't acting! The safety divers was too far from her so that happened. The last UW scene was also good but I'm partial to swimsuits so yeah XD

Suou's adorable expressions - yes, when she had to come up she looks disapponted with herself, but then is surprised when she is declared the winner (well, girls are innately better than boys at breath control...), and finally joy comes back when the gang starts to sprinkle water on one another. Lots of expressions there and how the water surface was depicted looking up was quite fabulous.

I recall Dragon Ball's UW scene was pretty short in the manga but got stretched in the anime, encompassing two episodes. But it was kinda flat (e.g. Bulma's kicking of legs...) so I agree manga is the better one. The outright recklessness of the group is quite intriguing, something you only find elsewhere in B.L.U.E. (the classic UW game) or Tomb Raiders....lol.

I haven't heard of Turistas, better look into that one. I know Hollywoood actors/actresses pull off quite amazing stunts (well, they are paid a fortune for those...) and are sometimes are quoted to have gone through some exteme rigorous training to play their part. One recent example would be MI Rogue Nation with Tom Cruise, along with his sidekick (?) lady - but sometimes the plot ruins these efforts. As for Rogue Nation Tom wears a timer on his wrist to show his oxygen levels (?) and how long he has held his breath, but this is purely for the audience and an operative would not need a wristtimer to know how suffocated he is. (lol)

Her winning was a surprise! She is a tough little cutie. Shame her series is dead.

The anime added stuff that I don't really like... Yes, it was implied in the anime that Bulma almost drowned, but honestly it was just unnecessary because it did not add anything to the outcome.
I expect Goku doing something crazy like that, but Bulma and Krillin? lol
B.L.U.E... I played that for a while last year! I should play that again ^_^ I get stuck a lot though because it's in Japanese >_<

Turistas is a B horror movie. I knew it from some old UW focused site, and the screenshots posted there were great! I searched every nook and cranny for the movie (it was the dark age before internet in my county is common XD), eventually I found a pirated DVD of it in a DVD rental. I think I copied the movie in my HD lol.
The MI scene was great! My most favorite part of the scene was the lady, she just jumped in without any equipment to help Tom Cruise, she is one awesome lady XD

Yeah I got stuck in B.L.U.E. and gave up....though I am Japanese (lol)
One trait with this game is the ease and calm that Maya reacts with to the most horrendous situations, like "it's locked...oww what do I do now?" I wonder her scientist dad who is working on the rig nearby does not get worried when his daughter is getting trapped underwater like five times a day. And these situations are so helpless (at least on the face) once incident is enough to give a Navy Seal a PTSD...lol. I guess we could use some parental guidance, same goes to Nanami of the Seven Seas :-)

Posting a link to Turistas I found for our visitors, the UW scene is about 40 minutes into the movie.  :-)

lol that's how she reacted to being trapped? Tough girl! Wouldn't be weird if she has any past stories related to the sea or something like that... She was best friends with the dolphin right?

I wish something like B.L.U.E would come out nowadays. I mean, yeah there's foxeye and they're awesome but I'm just wondering if any other people would release something similar (a 3D exploration UW game).

Well, I can't think of anything that took place wholly underwater, but I can name quite a few with fantastic underwater scenes.

Some of my favorites:
-TURBO: A Power Rangers Movie. The entire film is an absolute snorefest even for Power Rangers fans, but the only reason I remember that movie at all was because there was a scene where four characters (one of them Kimberly, the cutest girl in the entire series) had to escape underwater. Her shirt snags on one of the rivets, and she nearly drowns before her friend can set her free. Lots of bubbles, lots of sound effects, lots of fun. Probably the scene that made me realize I had a thing for water.
-Atlantis: The Lost Empire had a scene where Milo and Kida had to go underwater to read some Atlantean ruins. It focuses more on the guy than the girl, but the animation is so fluid (lol) and beautiful that it instantly springs to mind.
-Bermuda Triangle is a mostly-forgotten TV movie, which is in my mind only because the main character (a teen girl) goes freediving with dolphins three separate times throughout the movie. Once to meet and play with the dolphins, one where she discovers a sunken airplane (and freaks out underwater when she sees the skeletons of what used to be the pilots), and one more where she explores the sunken airplane, gets stuck inside, and nearly drowns. All three scenes are awesome, and the girl is a really natural swimmer!

I actually have a YouTube channel (not my main one) dedicated to collecting and curating underwater videos from all over YouTube. Playlists are organized based on content, whether it's anime, movies, or just videos of people having fun in pools. If you're interested, you can check it out at the link below:

Power Rangers - do you recall which episode? Well that was not on my radar...

With Bermuda Triangle, I did not know there were three scenes (I knew there were two, one being when the teen freaks out at those skeleton pilots (man, they were so fake they looked like a Halloween display) and the other when retreaving some medical supplies from the plane fuselage - and the shock from the bomb that some guys were just happening to blow off locks her in? I actually have a lot of respect for that movie, one thing is the substantial depth of that plane (it takes a while for her to reach the surface after her dolphins free her) and the other thing is because I suspect she is not using a stunt double. In the scene with skeletons she isn't wearing goggles so this is fairly obvious, and probably in the other scene too -  she is kinda on the "verge" of being cute by appearance (but very athletic looking) so I suspect the producers used someone who can pull of those acts herself. And how she gushes in air after her third and longest dive seems fairly authentic.

It wasn't an episode of Power Rangers - it was a movie. The film was literally called "Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie," and acted as a ninety-minute pilot episode for the new season.

The movie itself wasn't very good, but that scene really stuck with me.

I can't agree with you more on the animation on the Atlantis UW scene. Disney's 2D animation was always fantastic, the diving scene was not an exception. Also I think there's enough focus on the girl, could be more though.

It is such a shame that some anime has interesting UW scenes, but usually the animation is mediocre.

The uniqueness of Disney compared to Japanese animes is that there is constant motion - which holds true from Ariel's hair in Little Mermaid to the flickering lights illuminating the underwater ruins of Atlantis (mentioned here). And yes the scene is fabulous. Despite what some may say I like Atlantis better than Nadia and the Secret of Blue Water (not mentioning why I compare these two...) And Nadia has very little amount of UW scenes, save the one time when Jean&Nadia get sucked into submerged Nautilus.

To name a few Disney animated UW scenes - Tarzan and Rapunzel are recent ones, and a classic would be - American Tail (lol).

Yeah, Disney gave a lot of care in their animation. Stuff like Fantasia will always be remembered as one of the highest point in animation history. But for anime, especially anime nowadays... Almost everything seems to be rushed, including animation. Of course there are exceptions especially on anime movies, but not many have UW scenes...

So far, most of the media with underwater content I enjoy which I've consumed is anime and manga. So far, my favorite is Amanchu! (both the manga and the 2016 anime adaptation), though I also enjoyed the Kimagure Orange Road pilot episode (1985).
