Since War-Forged typically consider earth coloured coats to be more beautiful, Gwen thinks of her completely white coat as beneath average when it comes to ‘having good looks’.

Familiar
Name: Evan
Species: Barn Owl
Appearance: Typical male barn owl, orange(ish) with grey and few black specs. Tuft of feathers on his head and green eyes.
Personality: Evan is a young owl who just learned to fly. He’s a curious ball of energy, impatient, reckless and a tad mischievous too.
History: Due to Evan’s personality he might have sort of ‘accidentally’ escaped his shop-owner and wandered into the wild. Young and barely able to look after himself the little owl went hungry to the point he was almost too weak to fly. Luckily for him, he found food in a big barn. He’s happily running around there, chasing mice, when Gwen stumbles upon him and Evan decides to adopt the white mare.

PERSONALITY
Gwen is a soft spoken, kind mare who just wants everyone to be happy. She’s helpful and compliant and desperately tries to avoid conflict. Which causes her to come across as a total pushover and people will easily walk all over her. Still, Gwen can be fiercely loyal to her family and closets friends, though probably only in a passive way as she is too much of a coward to actively take a stance. She’s not as naïeve as you may think and will make sure to avoid people or situation that she doesn’t like.
Though she’s very shy, Gwen isn’t antisocial at all. She wants to connect to people and doesn’t dislike it when they try to talk to her. She’s just nervous because of her insecurities and is prone to overthink. After a conversation has ended she might re-run it through her head a thousand times to pick it apart. This is partly due to her insecurity pointing out all the flaws, but also partly because she wants to learn and better her social skills.
Gwen has always been very observant of her surroundings and this only grew when she gradually lost her hearing. She’s careful to pick up details using her sense of smell and her sight.
Gwen is a hard worker who gets restless when she can’t make herself useful. Going against her mother’s silent wish for her to be a ‘proper house mare’ and instead work the farmlands alongside her father and brothers is the bravest thing Gwen has done in her entire life.
Note: reading lips doesn’t mean just staring at someone’s mouth. Gwen will pick up ques from expressions and body langue as well to make up for the words she’s missing. Which means communicating with a very expressive horse that she knows is much easier than a stoic person she’s never met.

HISTORY
Gwen is born a little early, completely white and deaf in her right ear. She feels like the black sheep of the family. Gwen has a difficult childhood because she’s shy and insecure, other foals bully her and her mother is pretty hard on her as well. Gwen’s family is very traditional, but when she escapes her demanding mother to help her father on the farmland, he allows it. Gwen discovers her passion for farming and her father supports this. When Gwen is about fourteen she becomes completely deaf and panics, thinking she’ll be culled to Aodh. She cuts her left ear in despair, but her father stops her. After a lot of shouting and crying things get straightened out and a weight is lifted from her shoulders. Gwen is finally starting to gain some confidence, especially after Kaia speaks to her and grants her a blessing. But Gwen still has a long way to go.
Gwen’s father, Gerallt, is a very down-to-earth kind of stallion. He’s stern, but curious and he likes a challenge. The most important thing to him is family and traditions. He was born and raised on a large, wealthy farm, which has been in his family for generations. Gwen’s mother, Rhosyn, is a very reserved and arrogant mare, you never really get to know her and she doesn’t have any close friends. The most important thing to her is having a secure, comfortable life. She was born and raised in Skeldr Town and ‘escaped’ her life there by marrying Gerallt. She gave him Meuric and Aeron before Gwen.
Birth
Gwen was born a little early on a cold night in December. The midwife hardly made it in time to their home before the birth was over. Everyone was surprised to find the filly to be completely white. But she’s completely healthy and that is all that matters, decides Gerallt. It takes only a few years for the family to figure out Gwen is deaf in her right ear. They’re not sure, but everyone suspect she was born this way.
Childhood
Gwen has a difficult childhood. She’s quickly made to realize that she’s different. Her youngest brother even teasing her that she might as well be adopted. When she asks her mother about this Rhosyn raises her eyebrows and asks why they would ever adopt a ‘defected’ child with such disappointing looks. These words cut Gwen hard and deep because she knows there’s nothing she can change about them. In an attempt to not disappoint her mother any further the filly tries her best to hide her ‘defect’, pushing herself to the background.
Gwen is shy and intensely insecure, overthinking everything she does. Other foals find her an easy target to bully and once they discover her ‘secret’ they start to pick on that as well. One even warns her that weak and useless horses get send off to Eithne, never to be seen again. The little white filly is terrified and desperately starts to try and prove herself useful to her family and herd.
Despite her best efforts Gwen receives little praise from her demanding mother while learning to be ‘a proper stay-at-home mare’. Instead, Rhosyn harshly points out every flaw. The arrogant mare feels sorry for herself and is disappointed that her daughter is not more beautiful or skilled at knitting. How will she ever make a good match? Will her grandchildren have such an ugly light coat as well? Rhosyn can’t stand it, and when Gwen starts to sneak away from her in-door chores to help her father instead, the mare doesn’t protest, for a while.
Gerallt, though stoic, is not so harsh when it comes to teaching his three children all there is to know about farming the lands. It’s not unusual for mares to help out with the work, so he accepts Gwen doing some simple tasks. But Gwen pushes herself to be stronger, determined not to surpass her brothers, but just to be useful. she loves the hard work and is genuinely interested. Gerallt silently admires this and soon teaches her all the things he would teach a son.
Gwen’s brother Meuric, the oldest son, is set on becoming a successful and respected farmer just like his father. He’s as traditional as his parents in the sense that he doesn’t mind Gwen helping out now, but he expects her to stop when she’s older and get married.
His younger brother Aeron is more accepting of Gwen. The colt is also very interested in all that the Caenna has to say. All three of them learn how to read and write on a basic level, but Aeron wants more. He learns himself by teaching to Gwen, which results in them growing closer.
Teenager
It went gradually. Losing the hearing in her left ear. First it just got worse, like a thick cloth was pressed over her head. But eventually the silence set in, completely and indefinitely. Now she can’t even hear herself anymore. Gwen is scared to tell anyone when she notices. Instead she tries her best to hide it, reading lips, faces and body language. Speaking carefully and clearly. But it doesn’t take long before people figure it out.
All these years Gwen has been desperately trying to earn her mothers’ approval, but feels at a loss now that she’s completely deaf. She’s horribly scared that any day now they’ll send her away to Eithne. Her fear and insecurities turn into self-loathing and one dark winter day, Gwen reaches her lowest point. Out of sheer powerlessness she takes a knife to her ear, just as her father walks in on her.
The big stallion, usually stoic, almost explodes with rage when he understands what his daughter is doing to herself.
Gwen cries that she can’t help it, that she doesn’t want to disappoint anyway, that she doesn’t understand why her mother hates her so and that she doesn’t want to go to Eithne. This all causes a lot of confusion where Aeron helps by explaining that Gwen has lost her hearing completely and is scared to be culled because of it.
Gerallt bluntly states that Gwen isn’t going anywhere because she’s becoming a farmer and a damned good one too. Her mother assures Gwen that she doesn’t hate her at all. She just wants her daughter to be perfect and happy, staying in Onea and raising her own family. She add that it’s not even Gwen’s fault that she’s deaf ( which is the nicest thing Rhosyn has ever said on the subject).
Young adult
Though still shy and insecure about a lot of things, Gwen has been able to accept the fact that she’s deaf. She still tries to hide it from strangers for a couple of years, but has now gradually started to feel comfortable with it. The explosion of bottled up anxieties has helped her and her family to get along better, to now where everyone stands. Gwen and her mother have not grown a strong bond and might not ever get there. But at least Rhosyn is more aware of how she treats her daughter and tries to be better.
It feels like things have settled down and a great weight is lifted from Gwen’s shoulders. She loves her home and the farming work. Slowly but steadily Gwen is growing more confident, especially since she got blessed by Kaia.
‘I might be deaf, but I still have a voice.’
Chapter I to IV; Didn’t participate.
Chapter V; Inspired by the fighting spirit in a certain blind cabbage queen, Gwen finds the courage to throw something at a cultist, escaping the event with only minor injuries.
Chapter VI; Gwen nearly drowns when she’s hurled off a bridge. She’s saved by the Shield who she had been talking with after mustering up the courage. They become pen-pals afterwards.
Chapter VII; While visiting the Border Trade Fair, Gwen barely escapes the grasp of a cursed hammer that inverts its surroundings.
IDEOLOGY
Religion: Used to simply follow her father's example in muttering simple prayers to Kaia. However, Gwen has become much more devoted to the Earth Mother after being Blessed, determined to show respect and gratitude to the godess.
Leader: Does not have a strong opinion on the matter, but is glad with the new War Lord being a stallion again. Gwen doesn't understand Valkyries at all. She's scared by the Bloody Flanks and their plan to divide the War-Forged back into arguing Clans again.

TRIVIA
• Does not have tremor sense, but because she is deaf she’s sensitive to the steps of a heavy horse, the beating on a drum or thunderstorms.
• The family farm grows wheat, carrots, corn, lettuce, onions and potatoes. They also have a small patch next to the house with herbs, peppers and tomatoes they use for themselves.
• There’s a slight hill behind their house with a gigantic chestnut tree on it. Beneath it are the graves of granny and gramps.
• The family has a huge tapestry in their house that’s been passed down by generations, it shows the image of Kaia coming down Skeldr mountain with an army of unicorns. To the family, the tapestry means strength and endurance.
