Aurum was watching the cats from his tree. Every day for the past year and a half since Rusty dissappeared, he'd come out here to watch.
It took him a couple weeks to find this place, their home was quite hidden. The little dens were covered in brambles and gorse, hidden from view in a ravine.
Most people didn't come this far into the woods, but Aurum wasn't most people. He'd found Rusty talking to his neighbors cat one day; followed him back to the ravine.
Ever since, Aurum just watched, he didn't try to take his cat back. Rusty seemed happy there. At one point, Aurum tried to help the cats. He saw a limping grey cat
looking around for leaves and flowers. So he tried picking some and laying them out at the top of the ravine, but no cat would touch them. He guessed they avoided human scent like the plague.
Ever since, Aurum took to staying in the tree's and just watching, hoping, and praying for Rusty's safety. That was until the day of the storm.......
It had been raining for days. Lightning streaked across the sky and thunder boomed soon after. Aurum was sitting in his tree, overlooking the ravine. The cats were wet and huddled in their
dens, but for the most part safe. Aurum pulled a bottle of water from his satchel and took a swig. It'd probably be about time for him to go home. After watching the cats
for so long, he found a pattern. He would come out every day before a 'patrol' as he called it, left to circle the forest, then leave before the evening 'patrol' came back.
That is, unless Rusty was in the patrol. As it just so happened, Rusty was walking in the lead of the 'patrol'. Aurum watched as his former bright orange cat lead the
other cats back into the ravine before each scattered to their dens. Rusty's kittens were playing outside in the puddles while, whom Aurum assumed was Rusty's mate, watched
from the shelter of a densly packed briar den. Near by the nettles, a couple wet cats were grooming themselves; not far off, a grey striped cat and Rusty were sharing
a pheasant. Aurum couldn't supres the grin of pride, thinking of how well his cat had adapted to the wild. Catching his own prey, having his own kittens, and soon yowling at the other cats, and they seemed
to listen! At least, that's how Aurum imagined it. Sometimes, he also imagined himself joining in, catching food for himself and the other cats, impressing Rusty with his
skills. But that was just a silly dream, a dream of a dream really.
Well. Aurum thought to himself. It's about time I head home, everything is safe despite the rain. Aurum slid himself down the oak tree, as quietly as possible. He wasn't quite a cat, but
avoiding them had taught him a few skills, such as using water to hide his scent, and walking in places without leaves or twigs. He hit the ground with a soft thud and took one
look back at the ravine. Now mostly hidden in the gorse bushes, he could barely make out the cats. As he turned to head up the trail back home, a flash of blue lit up the night behind him and an explosive wave of sound hit
him from behind. A ear wrenching CRACK sounded through the air and Aurum turned to see a tree on fire, split down the center. Half of it was teetering over the ravine as cats let out yowls of alarm.
Cats were scattering in every direction as yowls of warning were sounded. But Aurum wasn't worried about them; in the center of the clearing the bright orange pelt of Rusty's kitten
flashed in the dim light. The kitten wasn't moving, she was just watching the tree fall; right towards her. Aurum had to do something! Before he even knew what he was doing, sliding down
the side of the ravine at full speed. He had to save Rusty's kitten!
Firestar looked up as lightning flashed across the sky. He let out a yowl of alarm, but everyone in Thunderclan heard the moaning, creaking of the tree and smelled the smoke of the fire
that swelled up its trunk. Even the heavy rain couldn't cover this danger. "Greystripe! Get every cat out! I'll check the nursery!"
The grey warrior nodded. "Brambleclaw, make sure the elders get out, Bracknfur, check the warriors and apprentices dens! I want everyone out and safe!" Firestar didn't wait to hear the rest,
He could trust Greystripe to deal with the rest of the clan, But Sandstorm, Leafkit and Squirelkit he would take care of himself. He bounded into the nursery even as the sound of the cracking oak grew louder. It wasn't going to
hold much longer!
"Sandstorm? Sandstorm!" Firestar found the nursery empty, and pulled his way out, scanning the clearing. He spied the tan pelt of his mate holding Leafkit by the scruff
as she headed through the gorse tunnel. Firestar let out a sigh of relief and dashed over to follow, before an orange speck in the clearing caught his eye. Squirrelkit!
She was sitting there, eyes wide with fear as she watched the tree. It wasn't just burning now it was falling, right towards his kit! "Squirrelkit! Run!" Either the creaking oak drowned
out his cries or Squirrelkit was frozen in fear, either way she didn't move. Firestar made a mad dash for her. I'm not going to make it in time! He relized, but he didn't stop running. Oh
Starclan, don't take my kit away! Spottedleaf help!
Then movement from the corner of his vision caught his attention. A Twoleg?..wait. My Twoleg?! And he was dashing for Squirrelkit as well! was he trying to help? The Twoleg
was running for Squirrelkit; he could make it! Firestar could only hope that he was there to help, and place all his faith in his former Twolegs!
I can make it! I can make it! Aurum ran as hard as he could. He had to reach Rusty's kitten! The tree was falling closer now, Aurum could feel the heat through the rain. The poor kitten must be scared to death! It wasn't moving!
if I can just ....... make it! Aurum made a lunge, sliding across the dirt towards the kitten. He grimaces as rocks stung and cut into his flesh, but he could worry about scrapes later. He slid arms outstretched and..
he made it! he grabbed the kitten and held it close. "It's okay! I got you!" He looked to his left to see Rusty running towards him letting out a yowl of alarm. Then Aurum looked up and time seemed to slow. The tree was almost upon them.
He looked down at the kitten. She was shivering, He could tell it was a girl now. Rusty had a baby girl. He looked over at Rusty, who looked as if he was running in slow motion and made a firm nod. He wasn't sure if his cat could
understand, but it didn't matter. Aurum tossed the little she kitten towards her father and hoped Rusty would catch her. Then the tree crashed down and Everything went black.
Firestar watched as his former Twolegs mad a motion with his head, then sent squirrelflight flying towards him with his fur-less forelegs. Firestar jumped in the air, grabbing his kit gently by the scruff and wrapping himself around her as
the crashed to the ground, shielding her from the impact. He kept himself wrapped around her, eyes squeezed tight, as the tree crashed down, showering them both with stray twigs, leaves and ash.
When the assault of debris finally stopped, Firestar opened his eyes. His Twoleg was gone. Buried under the tree whose flame was already being put out by the rain. There wasn't any sign of his twolegs under it, just blackened crushed Twoleg pelts.
Cinderpelt started limping back over from the gorse tunnel.
"Firestar! Are you okay? Where's Squirrelkit? Sandstorm can't find her!" The medicine cat hobbled to him, sniffing him over, before getting to his kit, licking her gently on the head. "We'll need to give her thyme for shock...Firestar?"
Firestar shook his head. A Twolegs may have saved his kit wit his life, but he still had a clan to run. "I'm fine Cinderpelt. Take care of Squirrelkit. I'll check on the clan." He stalked toward the gorse tunnel, still a bit stunned.
"Send anyone injured to me! And then come see me yourself, you could use some thyme as well." Firestar flicked his tail to show he heard, before he went out to check on his clan. He didnt get far before he heard Cinderpelt's yowl.
"Great Starclan! There's a kit under there!"
Aurum struggled to his feet. After everything went black, it all turned bright, the green. It was all so surreal. He smelled something...sweet. It was weird but, not unpleasant. His nose twitched as he tried to follow the scent, stumbling on his paws.
"This way young warrior" the voice told him. It was female definantly, not just that but her voiced seemed almost a purr. Catlike. His ears twitched, listening for her voice again. Wait...Ears twitching? Paws? And...a tail? Aurum let out a yelp as he stumbled on a stick,
his tail hitting his nose.
"Am I...dead?" Aurum asked, hoping to get an answer.
"No young one, just changed." A glowing tortoiseshell cat stepped into view among the foliage, towering over the new kit. Aurum wasn't just a cat, no he was much smaller too! "My name is Spottedleaf." The she-cat nudged Aurum back onto his paws. "We watch the Clans much like you watch your friend"
"But...why am I a cat?" Aurum asked, breathing in Spottedleaf's scent. She felt almost, motherly. Maybe it was his new kit instincts but, it didn't feel wrong.
"Starclan's will. You gave your life for a kit not your own. You have a true heart of a warrior. So we gave you a life to live as a warrior." She purred as she lead the way out of the branches.
Aurum was unsteady on his paws, as he tumbled out into the open. The rain was slowing down to a light drizzle. Aurum looked around the clearing. Everything was so much ... bigger! But...Where was Spottedleaf, she just vanished!
Suddenly Aurum heard a loud yowl not far from him.
"Great Starclan! There's a kit under there!" A grey-ish cat with a wonky back leg hobbled over to him. Aurum shrunk back a bit, trying to hid under the leaves. "Don't be scared little one! I won't hurt you.
A flash of orange appeared next to the grey cat. "Rusty!" Aurum tumbled over himself to get to his former cat, nuzzling into his soaking pelt. Rusty looked down at Aurum confused.
"I'm Firestar. I haven't been called Rusty since.... since.... are you. are you a Twolegs?" Firestar stopped and sniffed at Aurum's pelt. "Spottedleaf....."
Firestar sniffed at hte last wisps of Spottedleafs scent. There was no mistake. Starclan had a hand in his Twolegs fate. He looked down at the little kit. His pelt was pure white like Cloudtail's,
other than the bright gold stripes that ran along him. The kit looked up, beaming at Firestar.
"Whats a twolegs Rus...er Firestar?" The kit asked innocently. He really was....so Starclan does have this much power.
Cinderpelt walked up and sniffed at the gold-striped kit. "He seems healthy enough, but he smells of Starclan. I think it's a sign." Firestar nodded.
"Then all thats left is to give you a name." He told the kit. The kit seemed to ponder this for a bit, tail twitching with excitement.
"So...you're not going to throw me out? Do I get a cool name!" The kit was almost bouncing with excitement. Not unlike a true-born kit. Wasn't the former Twolegs worried about his predicament?
Firestar shook his head to clear his mind. It doesn't matter. Its Spottedleaf's will for this twoleg to join the clan, so thats just what he'll do. "Yes, you will be a part of Thunderclan.
I will not deny Starclan's will." Firestar touched his nose to the excited kit's head. "Stay here while I call the clan for your naming ceremony." The kit nodded, his tail stirring up the dirt
and leaves behind him as he wagged his tail in excitement. Firestar bounded up onto Highrock. "Let all cat's old enough to catch their own prey meet here beneath Highrock for a clan meeting!"
The cats that were now scattered about the camp drew together around Highrock. Greystripe sat at the base of the rock, glaring at hte kit. "Who's the kit? Is he from another Clan?"
"Did he sneak into camp?"
"He smells almost like a kittypet!"
"Leave it to Firestar to try to recruit another kittypet!" That last comment came from Dustpelt. Firestar sighed and lashed his tail in annoyance.
"He's not a kittypet. He's a ....Twolegs." Firestar stopped, just realizing that that probably wouldn't be much better. Yowls of disapproval sounded from all the cats.
"So now they can turn into cats?"
"Whats next?! Are you going to invite a fox into Thunderclan?!"
Cinderpelt stepped up beside Greystipe. "It is the will of Starclan! This kit was brought here by Starclan! Do you really expect Firestar to ignore their wishes?!" Thankfully
that seemed to lessen the discontent from most of the cats, those there were still one or two dissaproving looks.
Firestar Hopped down from Highrock to stand before the kit, who seemed a little unsure, looking at all the other cats glaring at him. "A-are you sure I should be here Rusty?...Firestar?"
Firestar touches his nose to the kits head. "From this day forth, until he obtain his apprentice name, this kit shall be known as Goldkit in recognition of his golden stripes along with the courage he showed saving Squirrelkit.
And he shall be raised as a Thunderclan cat!" Firestar glared at the other cats. Goldkit seemed to glow with pride though, at his new name, ignoring the glares from the other cats.
"Goldkit, Goldkit!" A couple cats shouted, though Firestar made careful note that many, Dustpelt included, did not give the new clan member the honor.
"Sandstorm, will you help raise Goldkit until he's apprenticed?" Firestar asked his mate, whom had Leafkit at her paws. Sandstorm nodded.
"It would be an honor Firestar. Leafkit, head back to the nursery, I'll be there soon." She nudged her little she-kit with her tail before picking up Goldkit by the scruff and carried him off to the nursery. "Welcome to Thunderclan Goldkit"
