It’s hard to believe, but here we are - DeviantArt is officially 25.

What an amazing, incredible, freaking journey!

deviantART has always been the place where all creators - from the shy novice to the seasoned pro - can stand shoulder-to-shoulder and share their art, pixels mingling in a shared space. From humble beginnings as a small hub for Winamp skins and desktop tweaks, we grew into one of the largest and most diverse art communities on the internet. Chaotic at times, always inspiring, and never boring - all by design and intention .

To say that 25 years is a long time for a website is an understatement. When we started in August 2000, the dot-com bubble was bursting, and most of the world was still on dial-up.

I can continue down this fun memory lane, telling you that Blockbuster was still king with 9,000+ stores worldwide, and Netflix was still mailing DVDs (for our younger members, yes, there was a “movie rental” company prior to Netflix). People used pagers and PalmPilots, Apple was on the brink of collapse, and Google had only ~60 employees. Wikipedia, Facebook, Twitter and myspace didn't exist. You could smoke in most restaurants and even on some flights. And lastly, the idea of a phone being your camera, computer, and gateway to global art felt like science fiction.

The Pixel Perfect Intersection of Community and Art

25 years, and, here we are - a quarter of a century later - still thriving, still growing, still creating.

I have been here for the last 8+ years (boy, it feels so much longer) and I know DeviantArt wasn’t always about fine art. The first mantra was “Deviating Your Desktop”- which is where deviations and deviants came from (did you know that?). It was a playful rebellion against the status quo.

That playful rebellion quickly grew into something more profound. In an era when the traditional art world often dismissed digital creation as illegitimate, deviantART became its first true sanctuary. This was the place where your digital canvas, your pixels and polygons, were seen as just as valid as a physical piece. Your passion was the only entry requirement.

And in this sanctuary, a community was forged. We were never meant to be just a gallery; we’ve always been about connection, conversation, and the belief that anyone, anywhere, can be part of a creative movement.

This 25-year journey has been one of constant evolution, marked by incredible progress and, admittedly, mistakes along the way. Yet, every decision, whether right or wrong in hindsight, was driven by a deep desire to make our community thrive - to be a place where any creator, from any background, can feel they belong and connect with others through the shared love of art.

Today, DeviantArt is home to over 100 million registered users and more than 700M pieces of art. Those numbers are staggering. But as much as we love waving these massive numbers- the real impact isn’t measured by that. It’s measured in the friendships that started here (marriages as well), in the artists who found their voice and confidence, in the students who kicked off their careers and became professionals, in the countless sparks of inspiration that leapt from one creative mind to another. It’s measured in the opportunities created, the growth, and the quiet joy of knowing your art, your story - touched someone else. That’s what it’s always been about.

The People Who Built This House

DeviantArt was founded by @spyed , @jark and @matteo , but it’s the product of a massive, global family of hundreds and hundreds of talented individuals (through the years we had ~550 employees and close to 900 Community Volunteers) who have poured their skills and passion into this platform over the years. From engineers and designers to moderators and community managers, spanning countless countries and time zones, each person left a lasting mark. They are all a part of our story, and their collective effort is what has made DeviantArt a home for hundreds of millions visitors and users.

The creative world does not stand still, and neither can we.

In Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, Robert Pirsig wrote about the false wall between the artistic and the technical. He argued that there is an art to everything, from a painter's brushstroke to a mechanic's well-tuned engine, because both are born from a place of care and quality. We've always seen technology through that same lens - not as cold machinery, but as the vibrant, powerful canvas that made DeviantArt the first true home for digital artists when many refused to call their work a “form of art.”.

We have had to constantly adopt and adapt to new technologies, to the changing needs of creators, and to the competitive landscape. This need to evolve is what drives our work today. Back on our 13th birthday, @spyed imagined a future where everyone would have “...easy access to every tool, every artistic lesson, every imaginable support group.” I don’t think he envisioned AI, but we believe the thoughtful integration of AI tools and tech is the next step in that journey, helping to empower creators and lower the barriers for anyone to start their creative journey.

I am humbled and honored to lead the next years of this hectic, chaotic, beautiful, and crazy company and community. Six Flags’ X2 feels like a Kiddie Coaster compared to the rollercoaster that is DeviantArt.

Our mission, even before we officially coined it, has always been to “Entertain, Inspire & Empower the Artist in All of Us”. That means being a place where you don’t just discover incredible creators - you also discover yourself. You don’t need to call yourself an artist to take that first step. Creativity can start small: a few words in a journal, a collection of artworks you’ve curated, your shot from your phone or your first digital art creation.

So here’s my invitation: don’t just come to browse and admire - come to create and connect!

Write a journal. Curate a theme. Submit a deviation. Whether it’s your very first piece or your first in a long while, give yourself that chance. Because the magic of DeviantArt isn’t just in what you see - it’s in what you create and who you get to know.
