Very nice work, it reminds me of some of the game graphics I used to see back when 2D was all the rage.
Indeed - that was the inspiration.
The game graphics back in those days had to deal with serious technical limitations, and that meant the artist had to have pretty good grasp of color theory and how to use limited colors.
Though I did not count the number of colors
I did try to not 'smudge' over.
