Thanks a lot for the critique! I think I understand what you are saying about the background.
If I had put a lighter tone to the right top area of the background, it would indeed have made the background go deep.
In this painting, I tried to keep less details in areas where I did not want much focus of the viewer. But that said, I could have still maintained the effect with broad brush strokes of a lighter tone in the background, in order to not attract focus.
Point noted to be used next time.
