WINGED GORGON HEAD HOPLON SHIELD

This  Pastel and Pen piece is a study of a Bronze shield, featuring a winged gorgon head at the Museum of Olympia, from the 1st half of the 6th century BCE. The elegant sweep of wings around the central gorgon would have looked spectacular on the arm of a Greek Hoplite warrior. The shield was on average 90cm in diameter, convex and made of wood and bronze. A truly stunning piece of equipment on the battlefield.
