Indeed, these are the Terran Trade Authority Minnows from the book Spacecraft 2000 to 2100 AD. Any of you out there who are familiar with the books will know they are based on a painting by Colin Hay and that I added C1 to the designation because mine are a tad different. This CG paint is for brand new reprints of the TTA books [link] being published by Morrigan Press [link] who has purchased the rights to do this material as a pen and paper RPG. A pretty cool blast from the past if you ask me :)

I will be doing CG paints more in the tradition of the originals and this is the first one so far, it’s also nothing like the original in the book. I figure any paints I do I want to do new colors on the ships, new settings, etc, just have fun with it. This piece is mostly done, save some additional tweaks (my PC has been doing random shutdowns using heavy RAM cruncher like Photoshop, it’s the fan, dirty again). I still plan to do more work in the BG and such. I wanted to post it now to get the word going on the new project. Something a little different, some classic old school sci-fi, I dig ;)

06/05/2006 Edit: Never had time to upload the finalized version of this piece until today. Some alterations color adjustments and contrast alterations. Copyright Morrigan Press 2006

Sorry, I think I'm a bit confused. Are these from the actual reprint? All I've seen of them is some lousy 3d work that isn't nearly as well done as the original artwork. However, these are quite nice. On the TTA website, they show the minnow in a bad reproduction that looks like it was thrown together in Bryce in an afternoon. Did they not use your artwork in the final books?

the lighting, the ship details, the station in the back, and even the rocks

all amazingly done

Thank you :) this one and the Bee vs Shark piece were certainly the two that were most fun. If the project had continued I planned to do more. Maybe I'll just do something again for fun in the future, I did enjoy working on these ;)

Oh, I should note, Homeworld was inspired directly by the original TTA and we actually had some of the Homeworld illustrators contact us about being involved in the planned future books. Again my co-studio partner was working on that but it will all depend on getting the books funding again as to whether those planned books can happen now. Time will tell.

i have to agree that these two seem to be some of the best ones you have made
i really wish that it had continued, and yes maybe that is something to do C:

yes i have read about that, and the ships in homeworld are fantastically designed as well, i can see the insiration on it

i still find it amazing that you are involved in all of this
fantastic stuff

Personaly, I like the paintjobs of the Minnows. Nowday's, It's kinda rare to have ships that have been personalized in some way. I love it!
Sounds like I have a new book to get!

Thank you for noting that, indeed that's how I approached them. The book with this art will be coming out very soon, prob in a month or so. At the moment Space Craft 2100 to 2200 AD, the first book in the series, is out in stores; Amazon, Barnes and Noble and Borders, etc.

Stellar lighting, not to mention a punctual use of color to lead the eye. Very cool :)

Point defence and interception if I remember correctly... Rapid fire slug driver? lol, it's been a long time since I read those, about the only book I bothered picking up in the school library...

Awsome picture, great mood and atmosphere. Very reminiscent of the original.

Picture looks pretty good.

I wonder if the background steals focus from the ships?
Went by the site and looked at some of the pictures and it seems that the ships "pop" out.
The background does not fight the foreground for attention.

The bright green base is the one thing thats different than the reds/oranges of the picture and it competes with the ships as a focal point. People's eyes are going to lock onto the area with the most contrast, the green will grab the eye before anything else. Need to lower the greeness so the ships are the undisputed focal point.

I am assuming that the ships should be the focal point but I could be wrong.
If the base is the focal point, then you have hit the jackpot.

Aye good observations and indeed I am going to address some things in the BG to recede it from the ships more, that's actually what I was referring to in my post regarding it being a WIP and planning more work on the BG. I did intend the entire piece to really be viewed as a whole with the ships being the center but not the sole purpose (actually many pieces in the old art books did have a rather epic canvas of imagry and it wasn't just the ships) but the BG is too present for me and the ships need to pop out a bit more overall without question. My PC is back to purring like a kitten so I will be doing my final touches soon and the Deviation will get the edit uploaded :) Again, great you picked up on some of that, I concur overall.

Awesome digital painting, I really love the lighting! I am totally unfamiliar with TTA, being that I never really got into RPGs... but it sure looks pretty cool from what I'm seeing here :) Nice work!!

Thank you kindly :) TTA didn't start out as an RPG, it was a series of space art books that were published late 70-early 80s [link] :) Morrigan Press [link] has recently bought the rights to do the material as an RPG and republish new versions of these old clasic books :) Vulne Pro is getting to play in the TTA sandbox and for me that's a nice nostalgic blast from my past as well as most of the other artisits on my team.

They're quite cool. If you can't find the originals the first of the new material from Morrigan comes out in June ;)

Thanks man :) I'd have done the final touches but I haven't cracked my box open yet to get to the fan. I did a pile of Teran spacecraft thumbs old school pencil and paper though and the latest batch of FOIL thumbs I posted in scraps. I'll fire those TTA thumbs over in a few.

Thanks man, very kind words indeed :) Yeah it does have a Star Wars vibe but that's pretty much due to the fact that the original TTA books this game is based on came out in that time period and the original paintings in the books were done during the 70s and early 80s, or thereabouts.
