How to Crochet by VolensVivarium How to Crochet by VolensVivarium
This tutorial is meant for people who have never touched a crochet hook before and should teach you everything you need to make a scarf.

The stitch featured here is one of my favorites: half-double crochet (may be known by a different name outside the US). It's not too airy of a stitch (like double or triple crochet), and you can make stuff a hell of a lot quicker with it than with single crochet.

If anyone absolutely needs to know how to make single or double crochet, it's easy enough to pick those up from half-double.
For single crochet, leave off the first yarn over on each stitch.
For double crochet, pull the final yarn over through only the two loops next to it, then yarn over again and pull that loop through the last two loops.

This is also my first tutorial. If any part of this thing doesn't make sense, please tell me!

Also: for those interested in how I did the color changes in this tutorial, then yarn itself is dyed in multiple colors, so the color changes happen on their own. I chose that particular yarn because it's a heck of a lot easier to see the individual stitches with it than with a single-colored yarn. Besides, I've crocheted with multiple colors before and it's a pain in the ass and definitely not something a person whose never crocheted before would want to deal with!

when i was little my gramma taught me how to start to crochet, but for years i could only make chains. then i taught myself how to go further and made only triangles haha. this will help, hopefully, clearer instructions than the books I've seen. ^_^;

nks a ton! I still suck at crocheting though, but this made me a bit better. I've looked at online tutorials, videos, walkthroughs, even got people in real life to sit down and show me...and I'm just not getting the hang of it. But I am getting better.

Someone told me knitting was harder than crocheting, but in my opinion knitting is WAY easy.

:] But thanks a ton. <3

Eh, it always seems like a personal thing. I know I can't knit worth crap without instructions in front of me and, no matter how many times I think I've taught myself, I always forget everything!

Awesome! I learned how to do this during summer school when I was in second grade -- can't remember a bit of it for the life of me.

..But now that I have this, my long nightmare is finally over. Thanks a lot! :heart:

Sweet! I know how to crochet already (although only basic stitches...and I wasn't sure what they were called...) but this is a great thing you have done for Deviant Art. Oh, and I'm also an artsy camp counselor, so yay for that! I taught so many kids how to make bracelets this summer... >_<

A tutorial for crocheting round things (like hats) would be loved too. A friend taught me last year, but I'm afraid I'm not very good at it yet...

Awesome. =) I worked as a camp counselor for a summer and a friend and I taught any campers that we could keep in one place long enough how to crochet.

I've been planning on making a tutorial for crocheting round things, actually, but I haven't had the time to do a proper one until this next week or so.

Yeah...gotta love high-energy campers. I'll look forward to seeing the other tutorial when you have time to make it. I made one hat once...it was so lumpy and weird-looking. >_< But then one of my friends loved it, so I gave it to her...now I need to make myself one. And who knows, maybe it won't be quite so lumpy...
