This was an entry for a CGSociety contest in 2007. I used Wings and Maya for modelling, Darktree Textures and Photoshop for texturing, Maya again for scene setup and lighting, and 3Delight for rendering. Some custom shaders were written using Windows Notepad and previsualized with Aqsis.

Update: Voltz115 asked about seeing a wireframe of this scene, to get a sense of what was done with geometry and what was done with shaders. A screen-grab from Maya is now available here.

While I understand the problems related to copyright infringements against pieces shown in places such as this, I always find if a little sad when I see someone go over the other end of the spectrum; try as you might, there is nothing that will take away fair use rights from anyone, and it is very important that people are able to use images such as this for their research, teaching or study (especially when said study is private).

While copyrights are a given even without a separate mention and infringements need not be tolerated, total denying of usage for any purpose is just as much of a right infringement as there is absolutely nothing anyone can do to take away fair use rights (and rightly so). Why is there not a "(obviously except for fair use)" in there, since explicitly expressing the rights is seen as such an important thing?

That's a nice take on intellectual property rights, but if you think I won't come after you in court if you try to make money off of my work without my permission, pass my work off as your own, or use it for purposes that I view as unethical or undesirable, you're going to find yourself in very hot water.  I've had work stolen enough times that I have pretty much a zero-tolerance policy on those who use my stuff without asking first -- and there has been a situation in which an organization paid me after the fact (and a price that I named) to avoid a lawsuit after they used my stuff illegally.  Although I'm a hobbyist, I also have friends whose livelihoods depend on being able to sell art, so I don't screw around and give away for free the same product that they need to sell if they're going to eat.  (Note that, if you do ask, I'm pretty likely just to say "go for it" if it's for non-commercial purposes, and to set my prices reasonably -- being careful not to devalue the work of artist friends -- based on ability to pay and what profit you're likely to make if it's for a commercial purpose.  But I insist on being informed of how you wish to use my work first, and on having the option of saying "no".)

Thanks! Yeah, it's always a challenge to get away from that "rendered" look.
